THE SQUARE RING
October 26, 2002 -by Howie Reed
In boxing it’s a given that boxer’s
from different countries or ethnic groups carry the traits of that group
into the ring. Mexican , Thai and Filipino fighters have the reputation of
never taking a step backward, take two punches to land one and have great
hearts. The latter trait, if one choose, could be traced to the Greek
custom of "going out on your shield." Please no cards or
letters, I know none of the groups descended directly from Greeks. Editorial

Why isn't Jirov vs. Toney
headlining their own card?
(OCT 14) At the Rose Quarter in Portland, Oregon, HBO will have their first HBO Boxing Show for the year 2003, with Vernon Forrest vs. TBD as the main event, and the undercard to feature cruiserweights Vassily Jiroy and #1 contender James Toney. Boxing fans are looking forward to the long-awaited bout between Jiroy and Toney and it is sure to be an exciting night of boxing in the Rose City, but is it extremely disappointing that the Jirov v Toney fight would be reduced to being on the undercard of another mainliner. Director Reuben Lowing of Juggernaut Productions was working with Becky Schmit from the Rose Quarter and Moe Smith to bring Jirov vs. Toney to Portland March 29th, but HBO announced that the fight will be an undercard from Vernon Forrest vs. TBD
