HEAVYWEIGHT PUTS COMEBACK HOPES WITH GOOSSEN TUTOR PROMOTIONS- Nicholson
Has High Expectations LOS ANGELES (Mar. 18, 2003) -
Danell Nicholson's search for the right promoter to
take him back into Heavyweight contention didn't require a lot of time or
effort. He didn't have to look any farther than his good friend,
light-heavyweight contender Montell Griffin, whose
career has recently been both busy and promising. "Danell and Montell
Griffin became friends when they were both on the 1992 US Olympic team,"
said attorney John Hornewer, who represents Nicholson. "When Montell
signed with Goossen Tutor, Danell watched how they worked with Montell and
saw the opportunities he was afforded on his way to a world championship
challenge against Antonio Tarver on HBO in April of this year. We've seen
the kind of activity and results Goossen Tutor has given its fighters
andthat's why Danell decided to go with them. "Hornewer said Nicholson
(40-4, 31 KOs) wants to stay busy the first half of this year and in the
second half, he wants to regain his high ranking in the heavyweight
division. He's been ranked as high as No. 3 by the IBF. "Danell is avery
talented boxer-puncher," Hornewer said. "He had won 15 fights in a row
before losing to David Tua in the IBF-sanctioned tournament (on March 23,
2001) in an event Dan Goossen ironically promoted on behalf of his fighter
at the time Tua. Danell was outboxing Tua until he got caught. He's
looking now to get back to that level, directly eyeing the winner of the
Tua-(Hasim) Rahman bout. Born in Chicago, Nicholson turned pro in October
1992 and won his first 10 fights. Among his wins is a decision over John
Ruiz - now former WBA heavyweight champ - in August 1994 for the IBO
heavyweight title. He also has wins over Terrance Lewis, Tony LaRosa
and Frankie Swindell. In his most recent fight over a year ago, Nicholson
stopped Melvin Foster in the fourth round. As an amateur, he was on
a U.S. Olympic team that, along with Griffin, included Vernon Forrest,
Oscar De La Hoya, Chris Byrd and Tim Austin."Now that Danell is with
Goossen Tutor, Goossen has him fighting this Sunday, March 23," Hornewer
said. "We will look for Goossen to replicate what he has done for other
fighters, raising their profile and getting them opportunities. The rest
will be up to Danell to deliver the victories "The March 23 co-main events
will feature a championship doubleheader between Palm Springs lightweight
world contender Steve Quinonez (29-6-1, 11 KOs) against the very dangerous
Antonio Ramirez of Newark, NJ (19-5-6, 15 KOs). The opening title bout
brings together two of the most exciting bantamweights in the world today,
NABF champion Ricardo Vargas, Tijuana, Mx (33-9-3, 11 KOs) v. Gerson
Guerro, Mexico City, Mx (25-4, 19 KOs).The event will take place at the
