‘The Matador’ runs from ‘The
Rooster’ Team Rivera questions ex-champ Mayorga’s heart

WORCESTER, Mass. – Former world welterweight
champion Ricardo “The Matador” Mayorga has rejected an opportunity to fight
March 20 for the World Boxing Association title against reigning
title-holder “El Gallo” Jose Antonio Rivera.
The 30-year-old Rivera (37-3-1, 24 KOs) captured the WBA title be winning a
12-round decision from previously unbeaten (38-0) Michel Trabant in Berlin.
No. 1 rated Thomas Damgaard asked for a step aside from his WBA mandatory
title fight shot against Rivera, who, by July, will be the (WBA super)
mandatory challenger for the (March 20 on PPV) defending champion Corey
Spinks versus Zab Judah winner.
“I understand that Mayorga refused to fight Jose on the Spinks-Judah card
because he’s too tired from his December 13th showdown against Spinks,”
Rivera’s manager Steve “Tank” Tankanow said. “Real fighter’s fight; they
have big hearts. I though Mayorga was a warrior, but I guess he just wants
to stay home and play with his cars, rather than fight Jose. I don’t
understand how he could be so tired from such a poor demonstration against
Spinks; Corey took him to school. Mayorga must be tired from all of his
foolish talking before the Spinks fight. He’s still talking back in
Nicaragua, which must explain why he’s too tired to fight in March.
“Mayorga thinks he’s going to wait and get the Spinks-Judah winner, but
Jose’s the WBA mandatory. After Jose beats the Spinks-Judah winner and
becomes undisputed welterweight champion of the world, Mayorga will be
begging us for a fight. Maybe, by then, Jose will be too tired to fight
him?”
