(FEB 2) A great icon of boxing has left and gone through the path of "no return." Angelo Dundee, the master technician and who handled the corners of Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, among others, and who had the ability to guide these two heroes to the greatest victories against adversity. Angelo will be remembered by the boxing world for his great charisma, a person who could manage to set the mind to be the one of a winner, no matter what, defeat was "not" an option. The WBC joins the world of boxing to remember one of the greatest of boxing and wishes to recommend that the 10-bell ceremony is rendered in all the arenas of the world as a posthumous homage to our dear Angelo. We extend our deepest condolences to the Dundee Family and our heartwarming feelings as they must be very proud to see how this man has left his name in the history books written with golden letters. (FEB 2) The last time I saw Goody Petronelli in person was March 2010 at Foxwoods...I knew him pretty well from all the years I've spent sparring with his fighters at his gym in Brockton....(I first boxed there with Cedric Parsons in 1986 and I last boxed there in 2010 with Demetrius Andrade)....I was in the dressing room at the casino and realizing Angelo Dundee was also in the building that night and I went and got him and said, "I have an old friend of yours in the dressing room who will definitely want to see you"...and they met up again, more than 24 years after Hagler-Leonard...and they greeted each other and talked it up like long lost friends...I asked them to take a photo together and this is how they posed...I'm very glad I was there to see it (and listen to them as they talked about the old days, about fighters, family, etc) and capture the moment...even more amazing now in light of the fact that they both have passed on within just a few days of each other this week...

(FEB 2) We’ve lost a great human being whose contributions reached far beyond the world of boxing. I had the privilege and honor to have Angelo working in my corner for many of my fights over the past six years. To me he was a friend, confidant and a great boxing mind. I’m glad that I was able to talk with him on a regular basis and we recently discussed my upcoming fight. His advice was always inspiring and encouraging to me. He always seemed to be correct in his analysis. I will miss him dearly but he will always be in my heart and in my thoughts. My prayers are with him and his family. May God bless him and bring him peace. Jimmy Lange -WBU Jr. Middleweight Champion

(JAN 23) Darren Barker has plenty of exciting options in
front of him for his next fight but his promoter Eddie Hearn says
they are ready to strike this week.
Barker announced himself on the World stage with a gutsy challenge
against pound-for-pound star Sergio Martinez in Atlantic City in
October, and his performance should lead to a second World title
shot this year. Hearn had earmarked the 29 year-old for the
chief support slot when Kell Brook faces Matthew Hatton in Sheffield
on March 17, but news of that clash prompted talks of World title
challenges against Russian WBO champion Dmitry Pirog, Mexican WBC
king Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Australian IBF belt holder Daniel
Geale. Hearn also revealed he could set up another mouth-watering
Brit clash with Barker tackling Martin Murray. “I have had
positive talks with Pirog and Geale’s promoters and I am in constant
communication with Top Rank over a Chavez fight in May,” said Hearn.
“We have also made an offer to Martin Murray and are waiting to hear
back from his team. “It’s a very exciting time for Darren and
he needs to have a date in his head to focus on now that he is back
in the gym, so a decision will be made soon.”

(JAN 23) Grange Global Promotions in conjunction with Main Event
Television and Gary Shaw Productions present a night of world class
boxing Wednesday, March 7th 2012 at the Derwent Entertainment
Centre, Hobart, Tasmania.
This will be last bout on home soil before heading abroad,
International Boxing Federation world Middleweight champion Daniel
Geale faces his toughest test to date when he defends his crown
against the number one contender Osumanu Adama of the USA.
The champion wants another taste of hometown support after the
roaring atmosphere generated by the D.E.C.s capacity crowd during
his 1st defense was compared by legendary U.S. promoter, Gary Shaw,
to that of a Las Vegas super fight. This is Daniel's mandatory
defense of the much coveted IBF 160lb title captured in Germany last
May, Geale's record currently stands at 26-1 (15 KO) and victory
imperative in order to set up a unification bout abroad in the
middle of the year. Whilst his team negotiates with Sergio Martinez,
Dmitry Pirog and Felix Sturm, Daniel never looks past the fight
ahead and remains totally focused on his next challenger. Number one
contender for the Middleweight crown and the man looking to derail
"The Real Deal's" plan is Osumanu Adama. The former Ghanaian
Middleweight champion now lives and fights out of Joliet, Illinois
and boasts a record of 20-2 (15 KO). His path to a shot at the title
has seen him in his last 3 outings defeat tough Mexican, Angel
Hernandez for the vacant I.B.O. world title in a shutout, defend
successfully against Marcus Upshaw with a devastating 4th round
knockout, followed by the systematic dismantling of Roman Karmazin
over 9 rounds. In typical African fashion, Adama is fit,
confident and an aggressive come forward fighter guaranteed to apply
extreme pressure from the opening bell, the big question is "does he
have what it takes" to step up in class and on to the world stage,
to face the champion Daniel Geale. In the main event, Billy
Dib in mandatory defense of his 126 lb IBF Featherweight world title
will face Eduardo Escobedo.

Dominates Wilson! January 22, 2012 |

(JAN 22) Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson kept his undefeated record when he won a six round unanimous decision over Shawn Rawley Wilson, on Saturday evening at New York City’s Roseland Ballroom. With a standing-room-only crowd backing him, Melson was in complete control of the junior middleweight bout from bell to bell, putting together stinging multi-punch combinations to both the body and head of his experienced foe. Wilson, who has 59 pro fights as a boxer and mixed martial artist, occasionally landed left hooks, but spent most of the match absorbing Melson’s furious two-fisted attack. During the final two rounds, Wilson's incredible ability to absorb head shots took its toll on both of Melson's hands. Melson had to adjust from going forward as the aggressor in the first four rounds to a stick-and-move type of offense in the final two frames to preserve his sore hands. In the end, Melson landed many hard shots, leaving the Nebraskan with a cut underneath his right eye and noticeable bruising, but Wilson displayed exceptional toughness and finished the bout on his feet. Melson improves to 8-0 with 4 knockouts after defeating Wilson, 6-6 (1 KO), 60-54 on all three scorecards.

(JAN 19) Seeking the best possible fights on the planed, former multiple world champion, Vic Darchinyan has finalized his negotiations to challenge Japan's undefeated WBC bantamweight titlist, Shinsuke Yamanaka. Promoter Gary Shaw stated, "Contracts have been signed, sealed and delivered. The fight is finalized and will take place in Tokyo, Japan sometime in April. Nothing makes me more proud than having a throwback fighter like Darchinyan, who will take risks and step in the ring with anyone, anywhere. Yamanaka will be defending his belt in his native land so Vic's got to go in there and put it on him. I believe Darchinyan's power punching style will lead him to victory." Shaw added, "There's no doubt about it, Vic is a future Hall of Famer. In his era, he fought the best that was out there. He's never been in a boring fight. His style has always been crowd pleasing and you'll never see any quit in him, ever. He'll get my vote for the Hall of Fame when that time comes. Vic's got plenty of fight left in him and come April, you'll know why he's one of the best prize fighters of his time."

| Liakhovich
sets Chambers story straight Calls out Arreola
January 18, 2012 |
![]() |
(JAN 18) Former world heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich is not fighting this Saturday because his scheduled opponent, "Fast" Eddie Chambers, failed in a timely fashion to notify Team Liakhovich that he was pulling out of their fight due to broken ribs, which resulted in the cancellation of their fight as well as insufficient time to find a suitable replacement for Chambers..Liakhovich and Chambers were scheduled to headline Saturday's NBC Sport Network's "Fight Night" debut show live from Philadelphia's Asylum Arena. "Eddie Chambers is trying to save face in the press but I want to set the story straight by telling everyone what really happened," Liakhovich said. "Chambers' medical report about his broken ribs is dated, January 6, 2012. He knew about his broken ribs back then but he didn't let us know until January 13, seven days before our fight. Instead of shooting his mouth off to the press for a week about how easily he was going to beat me, when he already knew he was not going to fight me, he and his team should have acted professionally and immediately informed my team of his injury. If we had two week's notice, I have no doubt that finding a suitable replacement and making training adjustments wouldn't have been a problem, but it was a serious problem trying to do so with only seven days to go before the fight. "I think boxers like Chambers should be punished by every promoter and networks should know how he operates. He plays the good guy to the press, but Chambers is a fake. He didn't have the simple decency to tell another athlete about him pulling out of the fight as soon as he knew. It was his obligation to inform everyone immediately. I wasted six weeks of training, as well as the expenses for training camp, and now I'm not fighting because of his actions. NBC Sport Network, Main Events and everyone involved had to scramble to put together a main event at the last minute, all the results of Chamber's action. He is all talk and no action. So, for now, Chambers is history." Liakhovich, a 1996 Bellarusian Olympian, captured the World Boxing Association ("WBO") heavyweight title in 2006 by way of a unanimous 12-round decision over Lamon Brewster. Already in top shape for his now cancelled fight against Chambers, Sergei is now targeting world heavyweight contender Chris Arreola. "Arreola is waiting for another big payday to fight one of the Klitschkos," Liakhovich commented. "He's been fighting journeyman after journeyman. How about a real fight with me? I challenge Arreola to take a fight with me. This is a fight boxing fans would love to watch."

Debut: Joel Diaz Jr. January 18, 2012 |
![]() |
(JAN 18) Undefeated super featherweight prospect Joel Diaz, Jr. is a true throwback fighter, always in top shape and ready to go just in case a call comes seeking a late replacement for a high-profile fight. That call recently came for the 19-year-old Diaz (6-0, 5 KOs), who will be making his ShoBox: The New Generation debut Friday night against unbeaten Guy Robb (7-0, 3 KOs), opening in an eight-round bout on the televised portion of a card headlined by a World Boxing Association ("WBA") super bantamweight title fight between Rico Ramos and Guillermo Rigondeaux, live from Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The opening came when a leg injury forced Brandon Gonzales out of his fight against Caleb Truax. Diaz was supposed to fight Friday night on a card in Woodland Hills (CA) along with his Boxing 360 stable-mate and fellow Palmdale (CA) resident, super middleweight DonYil Livingston (7-0-1, 4 KOs), who faces Michael Walker (19-11-2, 12 KOs) in an six-round bout. Diaz' promoter, Mario Yagobi (Boxing 360 founder/CEO), has expertly moved Joel. Friday night will mark his fifth fight under the Boxing 360 banner in only eight months. "Joel is a special prospect," Yagobi said. "He started boxing at the age of nine and won 85 of 95 amateur matches. His power is incredible, especially for a 19-year-old who weighs less than 130 pounds. Joel's a real good kid, too. His potential is limitless and boxing fans all over the country are going to know about him after watching ShoBox this Friday night." Diaz is fortunate he doesn't get paid by the round. His last four fights have ended in the opening frame, including his most recent (Nov. 5) against 59-fight veteran Manuel Sarabia. "Not everybody is the same," the crowd-pleasing Diaz spoke about his quick work looking ahead to Robb. "If I can't finish him off in the first couple of rounds, I'm conditioned to go the full eight rounds, if that's what it takes for me to win. I don't know a lot about my opponent other than he's also undefeated (5' 6") and a little shorter than me (5' 8"). Pops (his assistant trainer/father Joel Diaz, Sr.) and (head trainer) Hector Vallardes watch tapes of my opponents. My job is to do what my corner tells me."

LOS ANGELES (January 17, 2012) - Due to the fact that there was only to be partial representation of fight officials who were involved with the December 10, 2011 Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson bout at tomorrow's scheduled appeal hearing of the fight's outcome before the International Boxing Federation (IBF), Golden Boy Promotions and Team Khan have decided to withdraw their appeal and focus their full attention on Amir's next fight. Golden Boy Promotions and Team Khan are pleased to have been vindicated by the World Boxing Association's (WBA) recent decision to mandate an immediate rematch and still hope that Mr. Peterson will honor earlier statements in which he asserted that he would be happy to agree to a rematch. In that vein, Golden Boy Promotions and Team Khan would agree to a 50/50 split of worldwide revenues derived from a rematch (including those derived from the United Kingdom) should Mr. Peterson agree to participate and hope that this will be both financially and professionally satisfying to Mr. Peterson and his team.

Less than three days into the sale of Kell Brook’s fight with Matthew Hatton at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on March 17 and the ticket sales have smashed through the 5,000 barrier. Promoter Eddie Hearn announced the huge all-British Welterweight clash between Brook and Hatton on Wednesday afternoon and the phone lines at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield and at Matchroom Sport have been buzzing ever since with fans snapping up tickets for the event, live on Sky Sports. “I’m bowled over by the response from the fans,” said Brook. “I knew this was going to be a big seller but these numbers are massive and it’s only going to get bigger. Fighting in front of a sell-out crowd is going to bring out the best in both of us.” Hearn revealed on Wednesday that the Arena was set up for 9,000 fans but after the huge demand for tickets, it is likely that he will open up the full capacity at some point next week. “The response has been phenomenal and both Kell and Matthew are thrilled that they will be fighting in front of such a huge crowd,” said Hearn. “I always knew that Kell would be a massive draw in his home town against the right opponent and we are heading towards a sell-out crowd that a fight of this magnitude deserves. This is a big fight for British boxing and the first of many that we will deliver in 2012.”

Falls Out, Chilemba Jumps in to Face Miranda February 3 in
Las Vegas January 13, 2012 |
![]() |
Claiming he is not "mentally ready" to fight, Cuban light heavyweight Yordanis Despaigne has withdrawn from his scheduled rematch against charismatic light heavyweight slugger Edison "Pantera" Miranda (35-6, 30 KOs), scheduled for Friday, February 3, in the Dallas Events Center at the Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel in Las Vegas. Instead, Miranda will now face South Africa's WBC #6, WBA #13, and WBO #14-rated Isaac "Golden Boy" Chilemba (18-1-1, 9 KOs) in the 10-round main event of an ESPN Friday Night Fights-televised night of boxing, presented by Warriors Boxing and Sampson Boxing, entitled "Super Brawls". Tickets for "Super Brawls" are priced at $25 and $50 and are available at the Texas Station rewards center or at Stationcasinos.com/concerts. A few VIP seats are available at a price of $100. Please call (954) 985-1155. A controversial call brought a premature end to Despaigne and Miranda's exciting back-and-forth fight last July 29 (also shown live on Friday Night Fights) when Referee Vic Drakulich disqualified Miranda at :45 of the fifth round due to low blows and what many said was some quality acting by Despaigne. "I have said all along he is an actress pretending to be a fighter," said a disgusted Miranda of Despaigne's falling out. "He knew he was going to get knocked out the first time we fought, so he flopped around on the canvas pretending to be hurt. His fear this time around just proves that." While the rematch promised to be an entertaining scrap, the addition of world-rated Chilemba to the card actually steps up the event's significance on the world stage.

Final Judges scores, 97-93, 98-92 and 97-93. Boxing Action: The bout started with both boxing somewhat cautiously but with Simcic the busier of the two. While the defense of Adamek seemed difficult for Simcic to penetrate, he found more and more success as the rounds went on. Adamek had his moments and was dangerous with his sneaky counter-attacks, but Simcic put on a clever, if not spectacular, performance and while he didn’t win all rounds he appeared to have the fight under control all the way. In last night's 10-round title fight at the Palacio de los Deportes, Heredia, in Costa Rica between Hanna Gabriel and Dakota Stone the fight was stopped in the eighth round by TKO. Gabriel was literally handed a gift in the process, and it will go down in the record book that she successfully defended her WBO title. WBAN is almost sure that Stone, of the United States, feels blind-sided by what happened, I know that we are, and boxing fans around the world who saw it and stated their disbelief. In the WBO title bout between Hanna Gabriel and Stone, the referee, Gino Rodriguez apparently decided on his own accord to simply "stop the fight" in the eight round. No rhythm, no reason....

Douglin Kicks off 2012 with a Bang-He defeats Martinez by
decision January 7, 2012 |
![]() |
(JAN 7 Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin of Morganville, NJ scored
his biggest victory to date by outpointing highly touted and
previously unbeaten junior middleweight Steven Martinez Friday
evening at Mallory Square in Key West, FL. Kicking off the 2012
season of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights, Douglin and Martinez engaged
in an entertaining bout that was competitive from bell to bell.
Douglin boxed effectively and connected with the cleaner punches,
while his Bronx, NY based foe was the aggressor. Both men had spurts
of success and believed they deserved the victory, but Douglin’s
boxing skills ultimately earned him the nod over his former amateur
teammate via eight round split decision. “I’m happy with the victory
and Steven is a terrific fighter, but I’ve still got plenty of
improvements to make,” stated Douglin, who improved to 14-1 with 8
KO’s. “I’ll be right back in the gym making the necessary
adjustments that will get me to the next level.” Douglin also
feels that many of his critics have been silenced.
“I definitely showed everybody what kind of a fighter I am,”
exclaimed the 2008 National Golden Gloves Champion. “I’ve fought
tough opponents in back to back fights and Martinez is regarded as
one of the top prospects on the east coast. This is just the
beginning though and I’m going to continue my journey up the ranks
until I become a world champion!”

News: The Fight To Ireland Source/PR January 6, 2012 |
![]() |
(JAN 6) The World Boxing Federation recently introduced the Gaelic/Celtic title for boxers with roots in Gaelic and Celtic nations, and now the WBF has announced “The Fight To Ireland”, an event that will support the newly created regional European title, and launch a way for American Professional boxers to earn the right to defend or challenge for Gaelic/Celtic titles in Ireland. Promoted by Alex Beadle, President of the Georgia Boxing Association, the debut “Fight To Ireland” will be staged on March 17, St. Patrick´s Day, in Savannah, Georgia where the city hosts the second largest St. Patrick´s Day celebration outside of Ireland and draws in the region of 600.000 spectators and national media coverage. “This is a great opportunity for Irish American/ Celtic fighters to compete for the opportunity to fight in their home country” said Beadle. “Irish-American fighters have contributed greatly toward early American boxing history and we are forever grateful. It is an honor to promote a title that embraces the heritage of some of the most feared fighters in history. It is our goal to finale “The Fight to Ireland” each year on St. Patrick’s Day.” The idea to create the new title comes from WBF Irish Republic Representative David Walshe, who added: “The criteria to qualify for an Irish title restricts many non-Irish-based boxers the opportunity to fight for what is seen in their eyes as a very important title because of their Irish lineage. The WBF Gaelic/Celtic Championships, however, includes hundreds of boxers all over the world and gives them a chance to box for an Irish-connected title.” Alex Beadle is currently working with WBF North American Coordinator Alan Santana on which fighters will contest the inaugural Gaelic/Celtic titles on St. Patrick´s Day in Savannah.

Boxing 360 Signs Joey Dawejko January 4, 2012 |
![]() |
Boxing 360 announced today that it has signed Philadelphia heavyweight prospect Joey Dawejko (5-0, 2 KOs) to an exclusive promotional contract. The 21-year-old Polish-American fighter is scheduled to make his Boxing 360 debut January 13 at home in Philadelphia against an opponent to be determined. "He's a catch," Boxing 360 founder and CEO Mario Yagobi said about signing Dawejko. "He's powerful, very poised for his young age, with an impressive amateur background from 105 pounds to super heavyweight. He's 5-10, weighs 235 pounds, and is powerful with either hand. He throws punches from different angles and when he hits, his opponent really feels it. Big heavyweights feel awkward fighting Joey because he's short and stocky. We believe that, in time, Joey will be a cruiserweight, where he'll be even more powerful fighting in that division. We're excited to be working with Joey and look for big things from him." Dawejko captured 14 U.S. amateur championships, highlighted by him becoming the youngest ever to win the Eastern Olympic Trials at the age of 16, as well as a gold medal performance at the 2008 World Youth Championships in Mexico.

| ESPN Top Prospects Pick
for 2011: Jonathan Gonzalez and Badou Jack January 1, 2012 |
![]() |
(JAN 1) Warriors Boxing is proud to announce that two of its young fighters, Jonathan Gonzalez and Badou Jack have been named by ESPN Columnist Dan Rafael's Super 25 list of the best prospects of 2011. 22-year-old Gonzalez, co-promoted by Warriors along with Gary Shaw Productions, is 14-0, 13 KOs. 28-year-old Jack, co-promoted by Warriors along with Lou DiBella, is 9-0, 8 KOs. According to the esteemed columnist Rafael, Gonzalez is "...a strong volume puncher who loves to bull forward and look for knockouts. But he can also box and fights in a confident, relaxed manner. He picked up his most notable victory in June, when he broke down onetime contender Richard Gutierrez in impressive fashion to win a lopsided decision on Showtime's "ShoBox" in New York on the eve of the annual Puerto Rican Day parade." Rafael describes Jack as "...a bit of a project, but he can fight and is a crowd-pleasing, come-forward fighter with solid power. Although born in Sweden and now living in Las Vegas, he was the first boxer to make the Olympics for the African country of Gambia (his father's native nation) in 2008. He turned pro in 2009 and fought in Europe but fought only once in 2010 before relocating to the United States, where he has won all four of his 2011 bouts, each by knockout. "Being included in a list like this bodes very well for both guys," said their promoter, Leon Margules, President of Warriors Boxing. "Dan is one of the premier writers in the sport and he knows his stuff. Superstars and world champions have appeared on his yearly list before ascending to the top of the sport and we're very happy Jonathan and Badou have both been included in such esteemed company."
