SAN JOSE (SEPT 27) Last night at the Compag
Arena,
in the main event event, Jose "Cuate" Celaya from Salinas, CA,
outboxed and outclassed Darrell Sukerow, Portland, OR, to win a
unanimous 10 round decision. Celaya, the current NABO welterweight champion
and managed by "Sugar" Shane Mosley, dominated the fight from the
outset using an effective jab and counter-punching. Jose tried to end
matters in the final round, landing several big left hooks, but was unable
to put down his gutsy opponent. Sukerow showed a strong chin and was never
knocked down. By the end of the bout Darrell's right eye was closed by the
repeated shots. Final scoring was 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91. With Mosely in
attendance, Celaya improves 16-1, 7 KO's while Sukerow drops to 10-9, 3
KO's.
In an exciting semi-main event super middleweight bout, Ricardo Cortez,
now 6-0-1 (4 KO's), stopped matters in round one against Jerry Graham
from Long Beach, CA. Cortez, a local favorite, brought his own two judges to
this bout (and the crowd to it's feet) as he landed straight rights and left
hooks to a stunned and outgunned Graham. Graham now drops to 1-2-1.
In heavyweight action Duncan Dokiwari from Nigeria blasted out
Armando Rodriguez, Miami, FL, in round two. Rodriguez was able to land
his right hand in the first round but that just seemed to awaken Dokiwari as
he closed out the show with a flurry at 1:01 into the second round. Dokiwari
improves to 19-1, 15 KO's while Rodriguez dips to 27-9, 23 KO's.
In a middleweight bout scheduled for four rounds, "Crocodile" Calvin Odum,
Los Angeles, CA stopped comebacking Glen Corbus, San Jose, CA in the
final round. Corbus, out of action for four years, started out strong
winning the first two rounds convincingly but was caught with a picture
perfect left hook near the end of round three that he was never able to
fully recover from. Odum, sensing he needed a knockout, came out strong in
the final round and landed the big punch he needed. The referee stopped the
contest at 2:39 of round four. Odum now 11-3, 7 KO's while Corbus' record
stands at 20-5-1, 15 KO's.
The opening bout of the evening was a junior welterweight contest featuring
Julie Crockett, from Los Angeles, CA versus Lisa Lovelle, out of
Las Vegas, NV. It was clear from the outset who was the stronger of the two
as Crockett immediately rocked Lovelle with combinations to the head. Much
to Lovelle's credit she kept coming forward only to be greeted with more
punishment. Crockett showed patience in her attack and knew it was just a
matter of time before she took out Lovelle in round three. Crockett improves
to 3-0, 2 KO's while Lovelle falls to 2-5.
Last nights bouts were part of the "Fight Night at the Tank" series brought
to the Compaq Center in San Jose by Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment
and Golden Boy Promotions. Attendance was 4,717, the best attended "Fight
Night at the Tank" yet. The next "Fight Night at the Tank" event is
scheduled for November 21, 2002.
