Ray "Lightning Ray" Lampkin Jr.,
34-6-1 (17KO)
of Portland, Oregon, was born in 1947, began boxing when he was just nine years
old. He fought as an amateur, with 50 bouts to his record, and winning
five Golden Glove Tournaments, before turning pro. One of his biggest
accomplishments in the ring was winning the NABF Lightweight title in 1974.
One of his most devastating bouts took place in March of 1975, when he fought
Roberto "Hands of Steel" Duran in the sweltering heat in Panama City, Panama.
He was fighting Duran for the WBA Lightweight title. In the 14th round he
collapsed, and was hospitalized after this fight.
In January of 2011, HBN will be meeting up with
Ray and interviewing him with a complete update. Lampkin told us that he
is planning on training an Olympic hopeful in Portland, Oregon, and we will go
to the local gym that he will be training this boxer in Portland, Oregon to
check this out! More to follow soon!
