(SEPT 2, 2002) Leo Bayard, 73 years old, is training and competing in
boxing, putting in five days a week at the gym. Bayard trains at the
Kingfish gym in New Orleans, which is owned by Anna Beth Goodman, wife of
the actor, John Goodman.
WBAN asked Bayard how he got into boxing. Bayard said, "I got into
boxing, when I was 12 years old . A friend of mine took me to the gym
and I started to learn from him."
In the past, Bayard had about 50 amateur fights, with 16 of them when
he was in the Second Marine Division, and earning the Lightweight
Championship in 1947. Bayard said, "I had my last amateur fight on a
Friday and my first professional fight that Monday, in 1948."
Bayard served in the Marine Corps, from 1946 to 1948 and then returned
in August of 1950. Bayard was then sent to Korea that November and was
wounded and was back home that December for Christmas. Bayard told WBAN,
"I was release from active duty in 1951. Put 8 years of reserve duty.
During that time, I played football for the Marine Reserve----during
football season and I had 13 pro fights. 7 wins 5 loses and one draw."
Bayard retired from boxing in 1957. He added, "Didn't really have my
heart in it at that time."
Then in 1996…..
Bayard got a divorced and in 1997, decided to go back in the gym.
Bayard told WBAN, "I found out I still had it." Bayard said that he was
the talk of the gym, because of his age and because he was sparring with
the young boxers, sometimes going 15 rounds with 4 or 5 of them!
Bayard has been going strong ever since, and from 1999 till now, he has
had 10 Senior fights, that included wining the Senior Boxing
Association's Senior Super Middleweight Belt on November 3, 2001, from a
55 year-old from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 5 rounds of an 8 round
fight. Bayard was 72 years at the time.
WBAN asked Bayard what is on his future agenda in boxing. Bayard said,
"We hope to fight again in October or November for the title.
Bayard told WBAN that he lives and does what he wants regardless of age
and that just because of age, a person does not stop have to live their
lives to the fullest. He added, "If you want to do something, just do
it. I always say: 'Live your dream'---- I'm living mine."
