(NOV 5) The Ireland junior team
bounced back from a 3-2 defeat to Germany to come from behind and record
a 5-4 win over England at the National Stadium this afternoon. With both
nations locked at 4-4 AIBA World junior champ Joe Ward sealed the win
after English middleweight Tom Buckley's corner retired their man at the
end of the second.
Ward, from the Moate club in Westmeath, was 18-0 up.
There were victories also for Chris Nevin, Rohan Date - who produced an
excellent final round - and Christy Joyce. Those triumphs restored
parity at 3-3.
But England edged back in front following Damon Jones narrow victory
over Stephen Broadhurst at light welterweight.
However, Dublin light middleweight Michael Reilly, who availed of two
points when Wayne Ingram received a public warning for dropping his head
in the second, leveled the session at 4-4 with a 4-3 verdict.
And Ward, who was two points up inside the opening six seconds, then
made it 5-4 to the hosts with a world class display of boxing.
The impressive Michael McDonagh and Eddie Byrne recorded wins over the
Germans.
George Bates also impressed despite losing 15-7 to Theo Krechlok, who
claimed 48Kg gold at the AIBA World Junior Championships in Armenia last
May.
Ireland, England and Germany will meet again tomorrow afternoon. Boxing
begins a 5pm. England and Germany meet on Sunday morning (11am).
