Philly Boxing History
Briscoe Awards for 2008
September 10, 2009
PHILADELPHIA (September 10, 2009) - The
winners of the Philly Boxing History Briscoe Awards for 2008 have been
chosen. Bernard Hopkins was named the "2008 Philly Fighter of the Year",
based on his timeless victory over Kelly Pavlik last year. With that
victory, Hopkins turned back the clock, surprised the entire boxing
world, and upgraded his golden legacy to solid platinum.
The "2008 Philly Fight of the Year" was Gee Cullmer vs. Jameel Wilson,
an 8-round battle staged September 12, 2008 at North Philly’s Blue
Horizon. Cullmer won the fight by majority decision, but the two-way war
could have gone either way.
The winners will be presented with their Briscoe Award statuettes on
Monday, October 12th, at the Veteran Boxers Association Club. For more
information, visit briscoeawards.com. This is the second year for the
Briscoe Awards, which are named after Bennie Briscoe, the legendary
middleweight contender of the 1970s. Source/PR
