Partnership with Children
to Host It's First Annual Junior Olympics Day
June 19, 2009
(JUNE 19)Bronx --
Welterweight Champion Vivian Harris will speak to
Partnership with Children 6th – 7th grade
students at I.S. 123 in the South Bronx about the importance of health
and wellness and staying in school on Monday, June 22, 2009, from 12:15
to 1:00 p.m.
Harris will offer personal stories of success and ideas
about how students living in the inner city can better take care of
their minds, bodies and emotional selves. Junior High School 123 is one
of the lower-performing schools and its students continue to be
challenged by poverty and other family and community issues, which often
prohibit them from succeeding in school. Harris, born in
Georgetown,
Guyana, and a resident of Brooklyn, began boxing at the age
of 12, and has since gained prominence in the boxing world. His
appearance was made possible by the Retired Boxers Foundation (retiredboxers.org),
founded by the Bronx Bomber, Alex Ramos.
Partnership with
Children is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing social and
emotional support to at-risk children so that they can succeed in
school, society and their lives. Founded as Big Sisters, Inc., in 1908,
it is currently celebrating 101 years of opening hearts, inspiring
minds. Today Partnership with Children offers individual, small group,
crisis and family counseling to over 12,000 at-risk children in 27
schools in all the boroughs of New York City.
