Allen Green Makes a
Convincing Statement in the Super Middleweight Division

(APR 26) Last night two
super-middleweight prospects squared off at the Foxwoods Resort Casino
in Mashantucket, Connecticut in an effort to re-ignite their respective
boxing careers and jump back into contention for a shot at a world
title. But jumping back into the mix when the blender is spinning is not
an easy task. Not an easy task at all when you consider this undeniable
fact, boxing’s Super-middleweight division has become a variable
cornucopia of extremely talented “Prize Fighters”.
Big names such as undefeated IBF
super-middleweight champion Lucian Bute, undefeated WBC
super-middleweight champion Carl Froch, who by the way just stopped
former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor last night in
shocking fashion. 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward, knockout artist
Edison Miranda, and skilled boxer / puncher Andre Dirrell, just to name
a few. So with a division so full of talent and big names the question
is, who is Allen Green (28-1, 18KO’s) Well, up until last night, just
another good boxer swimming in obscurity in the pool of 168lb
“Pugilists”. His opponent, a super-middleweight prospect with a name
familiar to some, Carlos De Leon Jr. (21-3-2, 14KO’s), son of former 4
time cruiserweight world champion Carlos De Leon.
When the two met in the ring last night it was clear that most present
were banking on the familiar name to make a statement in the ring. In
the opening round both fighter’s engaged each other in the center of
the ring and started the feeling out process. Each displayed solid
boxing prowess, Green establishing his jab and something else. De Leon
Jr. seemed to be playing a more defensive role and finally landing a
solid double left hook to the body and head of Green to end the first
round. The second round opened up with De Leon Jr. attempting to press
Green a little more by jabbing to the belly, moving and attacking with
and landing his signature power double left hook.
But Green had a plan, a simple trap he
began to set in the first round, simply to let De Leon Jr. get
comfortable and open up his fairly tight defense by attacking Green with
his jab and left hooks. The plan worked perfectly and at 1:06 into the
second round, Green, while De Leon Jr. was stepping to jab at his belly,
simply came over top of the jab with a beautifully timed right hand -
left hook combination, dropping De Leon Jr. to the canvas. He gallantly
made it to his feet before the ten count but it was apparent that his
legs were wobbly and he was dazed. Green wasted no time tactically
attacking De Leon Jr. and knocking him to the canvas three more times
and scoring a TKO victory.
Who is Allen “Sweetness” Green, a “Prize Fighter” who last night
emerged from relative obscurity in the super-middleweight division, so
if you didn't know, now you know.
