(FEB 24) Nine times Irish senior champion
and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Ken Egan will captain the Irish side
for next Fridays senior international with the USA at the National
Stadium in Dublin. Ireland and the USA meet at the National Stadium on
Friday night and at the Arch Centre in Athy on Sunday evening. The USA
are due to finish up their training camp in Colorado Springs today and
will arrive in Dublin on Wednesday.
Newly crowned Irish flyweight champion Declan Geraghty could face 2007
World champion and 2004/2008 Olympian Rau'shee Warren at the National
Stadium.
Warren finished on top of the flyweight podium at the 2007 AIBA World
Championships at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
Paddy Barnes, a bronze medal winner at the 2008 Olympics Games, and John
Joe Nevin, who reached the last sixteen in Beijing, have been named on
the Irish panel for Fridays international, a clash which Egan believes
will be very competitive.
He said: "We have a good blend of youth and experience in the squad. The
USA have named a strong squad and we are all looking forward to what
should be a very competitive international at the National Stadium."
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association have named ten of the winners from
last weekends Elite National Senior Championships finals in their eleven
man panel for Fridays meeting.
The Irish squad for Sundays international with the USA will be finalised
shortly.
