(FEB 20) Brendan Dunne, Neil Gough and
Sean Horkan will receive special merit awards for their outstanding
contributions to amateur boxing at tonight's Irish Daily Star sponsored
Elite National Senior Championships finals at the National Stadium in
Dublin.
Dunne, father of ex Irish senior and European super bantamweight
champion Bernard, represented Ireland at the 1976 Olympics Games in
Montreal where he reached the last sixteen after stopping Japanese light
flyweight Noboru Uchizama in round two.
But he was beaten by Puerto Rican puncher Orlando Maldonado just two
fights away from a podium finish. Maldonado went on to claim a bronze
medal.
Horkan is a former Treasurer of the IABA and was Irish team manager at
the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona where he helped steer Michael
Carruth and Wayne McCullough to gold and silver medals.
Gough meantime, was one of the top boxers in the country in a remarkable
career which saw him claim eight Irish senior titles and represent his
country 74 times boxing out of the St Paul's club in Waterford. He won
his last Irish title in 2000.
The weigh-in for tonight's finals will be held at the National Stadium
between 8am and 9am and 12:00 and 1pm today. Boxing begins at 7.30pm
tonight.

Meanwhile, the IABA boxing will name their squad for next Fridays
international with the USA at the National Stadium
following tonight's finals. Ireland will meet the USA in a second
international at the Arch Centre in Athy on March 1st.
