(FEB 7) Darren O'Neill won his second
bout in twenty four hours to book his ticket into the last four of the
Elite National Senior Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin
tonight. O'Neill, from the Paulstown club in Kilkenny, registered a hard
fought but deserved win over John Joe McDonagh and will now meet 2008
European bronze medalist Eamon O'Kane in next weekends semi final.
O'Kane survived a scare to beat surprise package Luke Keeler, the
Belfast man leveling the bout in the final minute before winning out
a full blooded 75Kg clash by a two point margin.
Multiple Irish champion Stephen O'Reilly also finished on top this
evening, the Donegal ace chalking up a 19-6 win over Michael Collins.
Meantime, 2008 AIBA World Youth bronze medalist Thomas McCarthy got his
senior campaign off to a positive start with composed
16-2 decision over Thomas Roohan.
And defending heavyweight champion Con Sheehan punched his way to within
two fights of retaining his title at the expense of Declan Traynor.
Elsewhere in the heavyweight division, Jimmy Sweeney (walkover), former
champion Alan Reynolds, and John Sweeney progressed.
Super heavyweight David Joyce won the final quarter final bout of the
weekend.
The Irish Daily Star sponsored Championships will resume next Friday
night with semi finals.
