McGuigan Out of
Championships

(JAN 30) Irish U/21 and Ulster Senior
champion Shane McGuigan has withdrawn from next months Elite Irish
Senior Championships after picking up a hand injury.
Boxing fans had been hoping to see McGuigan come up against St Michael's
Athy welterweight Roy Sheahan, who will be making a welcome return from
injury to target his fourth Irish senior title on the trot at IABA
headquarters.
But former Irish Olympian and WBA World featherweight champion Barry
McGuigan, who works his sons corner, confirmed that McGuigan junior
would not be taking part in the blue ribband tournament of Irish amateur
boxing.
He said: "Shane had worked extremely hard in preparation for the Irish
Seniors, but unfortunately he picked up an injury to his right hand and
he'll be out for a few weeks."
The 2009 Elite Irish Senior Championships glove off on Friday February
6th. The weigh-in will be held at the National Stadium between 8am and
11am on February 6th with the draw to follow.
