(JUNE 23) Three Irish boxers are just one bout away from claiming at least a
bronze medal at the 2008 European Junior Championships after an evening of
mixed fortunes in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Ryston's Chris Mullaly, Moates Joe Ward, and Charles Gallagher, from the
Saints club in Belfast, are into the quarter finals with Mullaly and
Gallagher duo to meet Ukrainian opponents on Wednesday.
Ward will face Romania's Vasile Bucur in the last eight after earning an
impressive 19-3 light welterweight win over Kiril Samadurau of Belarus
tonight.
Mullaly was also in top form, beating Serb lightweight Davor Durmisevic
14-4, while Belfast light heavyweight Charles Gallagher received a bye.
Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Christy Joyce this evening after he
had to retired injured versus England's Thomas Henry and Chris Blaney was
stopped in round two by Bekhan Shovkhalov of Russia.
The Irish squad were in training camp in Plovdiv last week in the lead up to
the Championships which gloved off yesterday.
