(MAY 30) Light heavyweight prospect Tommy McCarthy is two bouts away from
claiming an Irish title at the National Youth Championships just a few weeks
after going all the way in the Ulster Senior Championships.
The future stars of Irish boxing will be on show when the Championships
resume with eight quarter finals at the National Stadium in Dublin tonight.
McCarthy, from the Oliver Plunkett club in Belfast, will be in semi final
action on Saturday evening versus Conamara ace Ciaran O'Griofa.
The Ulster teenager, who won the 2007 Best Youth award at the IABAs Awards
Night in January, advanced to the last four after a convincing win over
Galway's Anthony Ward last weekend.
And the recently crowned provincial champion can't wait for Saturdays
meeting with O'Griofa - who impressed against Brian O'Connor last time out -
at the home of Irish boxing.
He said: "It was a tough fight against Ward last weekend but I'm glad to
have got it under my belt. I'm expecting another tough bout on Saturday and
I'm looking forward to it."
Ulster Senior finalist Ruairi Dalton and Tyrone McCullagh are also through
to the last four following comprehensive quarter finals wins last weekend.
Dalton, of the St John's club in Antrim, stopped Lurgans flyweight Andy
Watson on the 20 point rule, and Illies Golden Gloves star McCullagh chalked
up a 12-2 win over Cathal O'Connor.
Bernie McDonagh, the comeback kid, will also be in last four action versus
Martin Fraiser following his never-say-die win over middleweight Matt
Johnson in the quarter finals.
Johnson took the first three rounds and was leading 6-3 at the start of the
fourth, but McDonagh pulled out all the stops in the final frame to edge a
9-8 decision from a four round thriller.
Meantime, Corks only representative at the National Stadium, Rory O'Donoghue,
of the Riverstown club on Leeside, will meet Derry welterweight Conor Coyle
in one of eight quarter finals tonight.
O'Donoghue, a three times Irish underage champion, progressed to the last
eight courtesy of a commanding 18-4 verdict over Lisburns Ben McCourt six
days ago.
The Championships resume this evening with eight quarter finals in the
welterweight and middleweight categories and continue with semi finals
sessions tomorrow afternoon and evening.
The finals have been penciled in for Friday June 6th.
