Multiple Irish champion Steven O'Reilly received an enormous boost ahead of Sunday's clash against Scotland after dethroning reigning champion Eamon O'Kane on a double count-back in the Ulster Senior Championships middleweight final at the Ulster Hall in Belfast last night.

 

(Ireland meet Scotland at the National Stadium tonight (April 24th) and at the Riverbank Hotel in Wexford on Sunday evening).

 

O'Reilly, who was beaten by Darren O'Neill in last Februarys Irish senior final at the National Stadium, was leading 6-2 going into the final round of last evenings decider.

 

But O'Kane, a bronze medal winner at the 2008 European Championships, registered four points without reply in the final frame to take the contest to count-back.

 

Both boxers were still level at 14-14 following the revised computer decision. However,18 year old O'Reilly had his hand raised in victory after receiving a unanimous 5-0 verdict from the five ringside judges.

 

Meanwhile, AIBA World Youth champion Ray Moylette and European Union champion David Oliver Joyce will both be wearing green vests when Ireland welcome the Scots to the National Stadium tonight.

 

Boxing begins at 7.30pm this evening.
