National Boy & Girl 1, 2 and 3
Championships
By Bernard O'Neill
(MAR 27) Some of the future stars of Irish amateur boxing edged a step
closer to glory following a marathon session of Boy 1 and 3 semi finals and
quarter finals at the National Stadium in Dublin today.
Fifty two bouts were penciled in for decision this morning and afternoon.
The St Agnes club in Belfast advanced three boxers to the latter stages of
the tournament.
Club-mates Eamon McNally, Darren Pollock and Amirh Pourmosti progressed -
McNally seeing off the challenge of Cavan's Pat Nevin in an exciting 36kg
decider and Pollock earning a 4-1 decision over Eoghan Hampsey.
Pourmosti earned his victory the hard way, coming from behind to register
the final score of the bout in the final 15 seconds against Tommy Maughan.
The Belfast Kronk, which is affiliated to the famous Detroit Kronk - stable
of 2004 Irish Olympian Andy Lee - will have one at least boxer involved in
the semi finals courtesy of Martin Hackett's win over Ryan Peake.
Meanwhile, Martin Ward and Shane Lesley were involved in the lowest scoring
bout of the Championships so far, a 31Kg
lst four clash which finished 1-0 in Wards favour.
Cian Folan and Adam Moran produced the first count-back of the tournament -
Folan having his hand raised in victory courtesy of a 16-11 verdict.
Earlier today, Bantry's Mike McDonagh booked his ticket into the last four
following an impressive Boy 3 win over David Coleman.
And Riverstown Luke Thomas and Loughmahons John Keenan followed that up with
thrilling wins over John Lawrence and Michael Sweeney to ensure that Cork
will have at least two boxers in the finals.
But overall it was a disappointing day for Munster after thirteen boxers
from the province bowed out at the quarter final and semi final stage.
However, Lee Brady of Ennis can be proud of his efforts against James
McDonagh in a three rounder which went to a count-back after Brady came
storming back to level the scoring in the final few seconds.
The Championships resume tomorrow with Boy 2 and 3 semi finals followed by
Boy 1 finals. Boxing begins at 10am.
The weigh-in for Boy 1 and Girl 1 finalists will be held between 8am and 9am
tomorrow morning at the National Stadium.
Boy 2 and 3 finals begin at 11am on Saturday morning.
