Otieno Retains Title as Ochieng

(MAR 22) East and Central African Super
middleweight champion Douglas Otieno of Kenya successfully defended his belt
for the third time in a 10th round TKO over the resilient Ugandan, Hassan
Azad. The Ugandan had proven a difficult opponent for the champion who had
to dig deep to contain Azad's counter punches. Otieno was ahead on the cards
when his opponent sustained a deep cut on his right eyebrow. Referee Vedo
Okumu stopped the fight in the 10th round. Otieno now improves to
13-1-(5kos).
In a strong statement to the African
heavyweights, Raymond Ochieng stopped Democratic Republic of Congo's Rodgers
Yamba in the second round of a scheduled 10 round clash. The Congolese boxer
had no chance against the hard hitting Ochieng who caught him with a heavy
overhand after a barrage of blows against the ropes midway through the 2nd
round. Ochieng now improves to 13-6-1. Promoter Atomic Bunde has promised to
enable his quest for the African Boxing Union Heavyweight title.
In other fights Uganda's Peter Semboze and John Gicharu put up an exciting
show in a six round clash that had the fans on their feet throughout the
bout. Gicharu who is the Kenyan National Featherweight
Champion used his reach effectively against the aggressive Ugandan and often
had to step back to avoid his opponents' charge.
Kenyan National Middleweight Champion Shadrack Kipruto made quick work of
Ugandan opponent Achilles Semwogerere, in a second round KO. Kipruto had
shown his intentions early in the 1st round.
In the Other two fights, Ken Oyolo won Steve Esonga on unanimous points,
Heavyweight Obadiah Mwangi won Mustapha Noor on unanimous points. The fights
were presented by Atomic Bunde of Time bomb Promotions at the Charter Hall
in Nairobi City.
