(DEC 20) The Irish junior squad beat France to win out a Four Nation round
robin tournament which also featured England and Germany at the Jackson's
Hotel in Ballybofey, Donegal at the weekend. Ireland went into
yesterdays (December 16th) clash with the French needing to win just three
bouts, but claimed four to finish on top from the three day international
box-off which gloved off on Friday last.
Ireland beat England 6-1 on Friday evening and followed that up with a 5-3
victory over the Germans twenty four hours later.
That set up yesterday clash with France, which Ireland won 4-3 courtesy of
victories by Con Sheehan, Tyrone McCullagh, John Joe Nevin and Thomas
McCarthy.
McCullagh registered his win against Walid Belaoura, the reigning European
Union Junior champion.
The quartet of victories combined with the wins over England and Germany
ensured that Ireland finished in pole position followed by France, Germany
and England.
Commentating on the win, the President of the Irish Amateur Boxing
Association, Dominic O'Rourke, was full of praise for the Irish squad.
He said, "The entire Irish squad performed magnificently all weekend and it
was a fantastic overall victory considering the quality of the English,
German and French squads.
"The quality of this tournament was top class from start to finish and I
have no doubt that some of the boxers
performing in Donegal will be the future stars of Irish amateur boxing."
Jim Moore, Jimmy Payne and Patsy McAllister were the Irish coaches at the
weekends tournament which was hosted by the Twinstown Boxing Club.
