2007 National Intermediate Championships..By

(NOV 23) One hundred and forty boxers have already entered the 2007 National
Intermediate Championships which begin at the National Stadium in Dublin
tomorrow (November 23rd).
The weigh-in for the Championships will be held between 8am and 10am
tomorrow morning with a further weigh-in between 12 noon and 1pm.The draw
will follow immediately afterwards.
Preliminary round boxing will commence tomorrow evening at 6.30pm.
According to the President of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, Dominic
O'Rourke, some of the future stars of Irish amateur boxing will be
showcasing their talent in Dublin over the next fortnight.
He said: "The Intermediate Championships are traditionally a stepping stone
toward the National Senior Championships and I believe that some of the
boxers competing at the National Stadium over the next few weeks will go on
to become the future stars of Irish amateur boxing.
"The Intermediate Championships are always a very exciting tournament and we
are anticipating some top class boxing this year.
"We have already received a fantastic entry and I would like to wish all the
boxers and their clubs the best of luck at this years tournament."
Four boxers, John Murray, Shane McKeown, Stephen O'Reilly and Phelim
Halligan reached last years finals and will be hoping to go one step further
this time out.
Murray was edged out by Shane Hickey in the 2006 decider while McKeown was
beaten by Patrick Ward of the
Galway Boxing Club.
O'Reilly lost a close light middleweight final to Donal Ward just under
twelve months ago. However, O'Reilly has now stepped up to middleweight and
will be looking to add an Irish 75Kg title to his impressive CV.
Light heavyweight Phelim Halligan was beaten by Patrick Corcoran, also of
the Galway Boxing Club, in the 2006 final.
The 2007 Intermediate Championships will run over the next three weekends
before concluding on the weekend starting December 7th.

Weigh-In: 8am-10am and 12 Noon to 1pm.
Draw to follow immediately after second weigh-in
Boxing will commence at 6.30pm.
