(SEPT 20) A ten man Irish A team are using one of Irelands most famous boxing clubs to prepare for a box-off in New York next weekend.

The Irish squad are being put through their paces at the Drimnagh BC in Dublin- home club of 1992 Olympic gold medallist Michael Carruth-ahead of their meeting with a New York Golden Gloves selection in the Big Apple on September 22nd.

The A team will also compete in Belfast, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Russia, and Poland over the next year, and a trip to New Zealand is also planned for March 2008.

The heavy schedule over the next twelve months will provide vital international experience for the Irish A team, three of which were included on an Irish squad which drew 8-8 on aggregate with Russia at the National Stadium in Dublin and at the Athlone Institute of Technology last April.

Willie Casey, Karl Crawley, and Fergal Redmond were in action against the Russians, with Casey, from Our Lady of Lourdes club in Limerick, recording a thrilling 17-12 win over Kirill Glumov in Athlone.

The Irish squad also took part in a recent Central Council box-off at the National Stadium ahead of their trip and will be under experienced coaches Christy McKenna from Drogheda and Ken Moore in New York.

Moore, from the St Francis club in Limerick, was in Andy Lees corner at national level along with Finbar O'Brien before Lee won a bronze medal at the European Senior Championships in Croatia to clinch qualification for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

According to IABA Liaison Officer Larry Morrison, they will be competing with confidence at the Christ the King High School in New York this Saturday night.

He said: "The squad have been getting some very hard training sessions under the belts at the Drimnagh Boxing Club over the last few weeks and they will be well prepared for this trip.

"It will be a tough assignment, as New York will name an experienced squad but we are all very much looking forward to
this tournament.

"We are using these tournaments and further tournaments in the coming year or so to give the Irish squad the experience of competing around the world."

The Irish squad and management will depart for New York this Thursday.
