Round Robin Results

(AUG 23) The St Michael's Athy duo of Eric Donovan and John Joe Joyce
and St Saviours middleweight Darren Sutherland all recorded victories in
their opening bouts against Germany in a senior international Round
Robin tournament in Germany this afternoon and this evening.
But there was disappointment for Paddy Barnes, Conor Ahern, Ryan
Lindberg,David Oliver Joyce, Ken Egan, John Sweeney and Cathal McMonagle
who all lost in Heidelberg.
Donovan chalked up a convincing 37-10 win over Eugen Burhard while Joyce
made it a St Michael's Athy double with a 26-17 victory over Adriani
Vastine.
Sutherland, meanwhile, was handed a positive 22-16 verdict against
Holland's Dimitri Serdjok who is a guest on the German side.
However, light heavyweight Ken Egan was beaten by a margin of three
points in his 81Kg clash with Rene Krause and Paddy Barnes was edged out
on a countback.
Ireland will meet Germany again, and then France in the next phases of
the tournament. The Irish Amateur Boxing Association will announce their
squad for the Octobers World Championships in Chicago after they return
from Germany.
The 2007 World Championships will act as the first qualifier for the
2008 Olympic Games.
