England Record Victory Over Ireland ...by Bernard O'Neill

(MAY 25) England emerged victorious from tonight's U/16 international with Ireland at the National Stadium in Dublin.

Peter Brady, Tyrone McKenna, Cian Thornton, Stephen Ward and Joe Joyce recorded victories for Ireland but it wasn't enough to stop an impressive looking English selection winning 8-5 on the night.

Strawweight Neil Walker put in a brave performance in his curtain raiser with Martin Ward but was behind at the end of each round before being handed a 21-4 reversal.

Light flyweight Peter Brady took the contest straight to Michael Joyce from the opening bell opening up 7-4 advantage before consolidating his lead in the second.

Joyce upped the tempo in the third and was connecting with some straight rights, but Brady kept his composure and extended his lead to level the box off at one apiece.

Ireland's Alan Phelan and Lewis Pettin were involved in a very close 50Kg contest which the English teenager won.

The third was the defining round in this showdown and Phelan gave it his all to overturn a four point deficit, but Pettin finished the stronger.

England then opened up a 3-1 lead following Billy Morgan's win over Paul Hyland who took a standing count in the second. However, Morgan, who took a standing count of his own following a barrage of punches from Hyland in the third, had to use all his skills to keep Hyland at bay in the final few seconds.

Bantamweight Tyrone McKenna's more composed style was in stark contrast to the busy James Barker. The English boxer did manage to breach McKenna's guard on occasions but paid the price for stepping inside once too often when he took a standing count in the second following a solid right from McKenna.

Barker was dropped by a double left combination in the third as McKenna ran out a comfortable winner.

Tipperary featherweight Dessie Fahy was trailing by four points going into the third and final round of one of the closest bouts of the evening. But despite a storming finish, Fahy was edged out by just one point.

England opened up a 6-2 lead after Ronnie Heffron stopped Belfast's Chris Meighan on the 15 point rule in round two and Callum Smith survived being deducted two points after receiving a public warning from holding versus Larry Fryers in the third to take the light welterweight clash.

That result meant that Cian Thornton had to win his meeting with Jonson McClumpha to keep Ireland in the box off. And Thornton, from the Furbo club in Connamara, did just that racking up 14-6 victory.

However, England's Mark Nugent then put his country into an unassailable 7-3 lead despite a brave showing from Willie McDonagh.

Middleweight Kirk Garvey came from being behind in the opening two rounds to edge out Thomas McCarthy-who was
6-1 up at the end of the first- but Stephen Ward chalked up Ireland's fourth win of the evening after he gradually whittled
away James Pollock's lead.

Irelands Joe Joyce took the final bout of the night following a convincing win over Nelson Smith.
