Ireland
versus Russia..by Bernard O'Neill
(APR 24) The Irish Amateur Boxing Association have finalised their
squads for next weekends double header of senior internationals with
Russia in Dublin and Athlone.
Eric Donovan, Ross Hickey, Karl Crawley, Aodh Carlyle, Terry O'Neill,
Eamon O'Kane, Ian Tims, John Sweeney, Cathal McMonagle, Willie Casey,
Eamon Touhey, Fergal Redmond, Edward Healy, and the brothers Jim and
Martin Sweeney have been named on both Irish panels.
Both Nations meet at the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday April 27th
(7.45pm) and at the Athlone Institute of Technology two days later
(7.30pm).
Three times National senior champion Eric Donovan will compete in both
internationals but will box at featherweight in Dublin before moving up
to lightweight for the Athlone meeting.
Irish super heavyweight champ, Cathal McMonagle will also be competing
in Dublin as will reigning Irish light welterweight champion Aodh
Carlyle who will also box in Athlone.
McMonagle, who had Bernard Dunne's coach, Harry Hawkins in his corner
when he won an Irish senior super heavyweight title at the National
Stadium last January, made a big impression at the recent Geebee senior
Multi Nations in Finland.
The Donegal born ace won silver in Helsinki after he lost his final to
ex Finnish Olympian Robert Helenius. However, it was Ulster mans 18-15
defeat of former Bulgarian Olympian and 2006 European senior bronze
medallist Kubrat Pulev that grabbed the headlines in Finnish capitol.
Irish and Russia met at the National Stadium in Dublin last May in a
senior international clash which ended 4-4. The Russian squad are due to
arrive in Dublin this Wednesday.
