Ireland Win Four Gold and one Silver Medal in Lithuania
by Bernard O'Neill

(MAR 18) THE Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) were celebrating today (March 18th) after winning four gold and one silver medal and the boxer of the tournament award at the Danas Pozniakis Junior Multi Nations finals in Lithuania

Flyweight John Joe Nevin, started the Irish gold rush with a 29-25 victory over Lithuanian Eile Petraus in Vilnius.

And to cap an incredible tournament for the talented young Cavan man he was also presented with the boxer of the tournament award.

Bantamweight Mark McCullough, from the Cairn Lodge club in Belfast, also finished on top of the podium following a convincing 27-13 victory over Slovakian puncher Tomas Varion.

To complete a remarkable tournament for the IABA, lightweight Anthony Cacace (Oliver Plunketts) and welterweight Michael Collins (Darndale, Dublin) also claimed gold.

Cacace recorded a comprehensive 31-11 win over Ian Mansry of France and Collins beat Bulgarian Vitalij Kuzmiriuk 20-25.

Talented Clonmel heavyweight Con Sheehan was also competing in today's finals but had to settle for silver after being edged out 22-20 by Italian Rosane Francesco.

Commentating on today's outstanding medal haul, IABA Technical chief Gary Keegan was full of praise for the Irish squad and management in Vilnius.

He said: "We are absolutely thrilled with the medal wins in Lithuania and everyone involved with the Irish squad deserves enormous credit.

"I was watching the Irish team in training at the National Stadium before they departed for Lithuania last Wednesday and they looked extremely focussed and we were quietly confident that they would do well in Vilnius.

"The junior team are training with the seniors and that is obviously impacting on their performances in a very positive way as they proved in Lithuania today."

Ten nations were competing at the Lithuanian Multi Nations.

Today's medal haul arrives just seven days after the Irish senior team took home one gold, four silver, and two bronze medals for the Zlatko Hrbic Multi Nations in Croatia.

The Irish squad were under team manager Bernard Dunne, coaches Jim Moore and Martin Fennessey, Eugene Duffy (R&J) and physio Lorcan Galvin in Vilnius.
