Ahern, Lindberg, Joyce and Egan advance in Croatia
by Bernard O'Neill - Ireland

(MAR 8) FOUR Irish boxers are through to the semi finals of the Zlatko Hrbic Senior Multi Nations following convincing victories in Croatia today (March 8th).

Flyweight Conor Ahern and Bantamweight Ryan Lindberg progressed to the last four following wins over French fighters in Zagreb.

Ahern, (Baldoyle) beat Anine Lamen 40-23, while Lindberg (Immaculata) followed that up with a 41-26 win over Lamens countryman Anine Boumerdach.

Lindbergs victory was sweet revenge for last years EU Junior Championships final which Boumerdach won by a margin of ten points.

Featherweight David Oliver Joyce (St Michael's Athy) and light heavyweight Ken Egan (Neilstown) are also through to the semis following wins this afternoon and tonight.

Joyce stopped Czech puncher Anton Lasokz in the 4th, and Egan forced Tomas Kovacs into two standing counts and was ahead 16-2 before the Slovakian was retired by his corner at the start of the third.

Golden Cobras Aodh Carlyle is out of the tournament however after he was edged out on a countback by Serbia's Nersad Malicezic, while Ian Tims (St Matthews) was beaten by Croatia's Izica Bacurn.

Light flyweight Paddy Barnes (Holy Family), lightweight John Joe Joyce St Michael's Athy), and middleweight Darren Sutherland (St Saviours OBA), will be in the ring tomorrow (March 9th).

Commentating on today's performances Irish Amateur Boxing Association High Performance Director Gary Keegan
was full of praise for the Irish squad.

He said: "We are very pleased with our start to the tournament as the four boxers that won achieved their victories with convincing winning margins.

"Ryan Lindberg was in outstanding form against his French opponent and we are very pleased with his performance and the manner of his victory.

Conor, David Oliver, and Ken also looked very comfortable today and their margins of their victories speak for themselves.

"Aodh lost out very narrowly and we decided to retire Ian as he took a good shot in the first round. However, the experience of boxing at this level will stand to them in the coming months."

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association have named a nine man team for the tournament which concludes on Sunday.
