World and European Rankings News..by Bernard O'Neill

(FEB 27) IRELAND'S Ken Egan, Scotland's Fundo Mhura and the England duo of Frankie Gavin and Stephen Smith are the only boxers from Ireland and Britain ranked in the top fifteen in the world in their respective weight divisions as published by Boxing News.

Egan, from the Neilstown club in Dublin, is ranked at eleventh in the light heavyweight category while Mhura is at eleventh in the middleweight section, and lightweight Gavin and featherweight Smith are both at fourteenth.

The table, published this month, makes for sobering reading ahead of next Septembers Olympic qualifiers in Moscow as three Russians occupy number one spot at flyweight, middleweight and light heavyweight.

Overall Russia have eighteen boxers ranked in the top fifteen in a wide variety of weight categories.

However, Cuba have five boxers in pole position in the super heavyweight, welterweight, featherweight, lightweight, and bantamweight sections and have twenty nine boxers making the top fifteen across all weight sections.

Cubas and Russia's dominance of the rankings see both countries command forty seven positions from one hundred and sixty five places from light flyweight to super heavyweight.

The Ukraine (heavyweight) Thailand (light welterweight) and China (light flyweight) occupy the other number one spots.

The United States have five boxers making the rankings but with just one boxer inside the top five.

Meanwhile, Egan is still at number four in the European rankings as published by the influential website ABA Boxing.

The St Michael's Athy quartet of David Oliver Joyce (bantamweight) Eric Donovan (featherweight) John Joe Joyce (lightweight) and Roy Sheahan (welterweight) are in 20th,13th,19th, and 19th positions.

Middleweights Darren O'Neill from the Paulstown Club in Kilkenny, and Darren Sutherland of the St Saviours OBA club are in 7th and 8th positions.

Lightweight Katie Taylor occupies number one spot in the world rankings on the ABA site while Allana Murphy of the Eastside club in Belfast has moved up to number five in the light welterweight section.

Taylor also commands number one slot in the pound for pound category.

ABA Boxing rankings are published independently of International Federations and National Associations.
