"Ukrainian
Trip for Irish Seniors"
by Bernard O'Neill
(FEB 14) THE Irish Senior squad will go into training camp in the
Ukraine in July of this year the Irish Amateur Boxing Association have
announced.
Ireland will train and spar with the Ukraine, ranked 3rd in the world,
between July 3rd and 8th and then compete in the Makar Mazai Memorial
Multi Nations in the south-eastern Ukrainian City of Mariupal between
the 9th and 15th of July.
According to IABA High Performance Director Gary Keegan, the Ukrainian
trip will allow them to "kill two birds with the one stone" and will
also be ideal preparation for the 2007 World Championships in Moscow
next September which will
act as one of the qualifiers for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
He said: "The Ukrainian trip is ideal because not only will we be
training and sparring with one of the top amateur boxing nations in the
world but we will also be boxing in a very competitive Multi Nations
tournament directly after the training camp.
"Everything is geared toward the World Championships and the Ukrainian
training camp slots neatly into our calendar of events ahead of Moscow."
The quest for Olympic qualification will begin in earnest next month
when the Irish Amateur Boxing Association send a team of ten senior
championships to the Zlatko Hrbic Multi Nations in Croatia which will be
held between March 7th and 11th.
Poland is then hosting the Felkis Stamm tournament between March 20th
and 25th followed by the Geebee Multi Nations
in Finland from April 12th to 16th.
Ireland will compete in Chemistry Cup in Germany between May 9th to
13th, and then the Irish Amateur Boxing Association will proudly host
the European Union Championships at the National Stadium in Dublin from
June 17th to 25th.
The European Union Championships will be one of the biggest sporting
events in Ireland this year with up to thirty nations vying for
continental dominance at the South Circular Road venue.
Ireland will then travel to the Ukraine in July after which the focus
will then begin to switch toward the Moscow World Championships which
take place between the 15th and 30th of September.
The 2007 World Championships have a massive significance as boxers
reaching the quarter finals in their respective weight categories will
qualify automatically for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. |
