AIBA President to Attend European Union Championships in Dublin...
by Bernard O'Neill

(FEB 7) THE President of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) Dr Ching-Kuo Wu will attend the European Union Championships which will be held at the National Stadium in Dublin in June this year.

Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) President Dominic O'Rourke today confirmed that Dr Kuo Wu will be a guest of honour at the Championships which will be held between June 17th and 25th this year.

Dr Ching- Kuo Wu, an architect from Taiwan, brought Anwar Chowdrys 20 year reign as AIBA President to end at a Congress Presidential vote in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic last November when he was elected to office by a margin of four votes.

The new President, 60, who represented his county at Basketball, was chairman of the Youth, Finance and Business Commission of AIBA from 1986 to 1998, and was also a Presidential candidate in 1998 but lost to Chowdhry.

He is also an International Olympic Committee (IOC) board member. His tenure as AIBA President will run until
2010.

The IABA intend to use the eagerly awaited European Union Championships, which will feature up to thirty nations, as a dress rehearsal for the World Championships which they hope to stage on their 100th birthday in 2011.

The 2011 World Championships which will act as one of the qualifiers for the London 2008 Olympics.

The IABA have already written to the AIBA outlining their proposals to stage the 2011 World Championships
in their centenary year at the National Stadium.

A formal bid to host the tournament in Dublin is presently being prepared and will be presented to the AIBA in the coming months.

Irish light heavyweight Ken Egan, a seven times National Senior Champion from the Neilstown club in Dublin, has won gold and bronze at the European Union Championships in the last two seasons.
