Lee is
backing Irish squad for Beijing"...by
Bernard O'Neill
(JAN 24) Andy Lee reckons his former Irish team-mates Ken Egan, Darren
Sutherland, Eric Donovan and Roy Sheahan have what it takes to book
their tickets for the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
And the 2004 Irish Olympian believes that Darren O'Neill is also in with
a shout despite the injury that has ruled him out of the Senior
Championships which resume next Friday and Saturday night at the Stadium
in Dublin with some very exciting semi finals bouts.
Lee admitted that it seems only like yesterday since he was representing
Ireland at the 2004 Olympics in Athens and he is quietly confident that
there will be Irish boxers at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
He added: "The World Championships in Moscow next September are the
first of the Olympic qualifiers and they are crucial.
"It is going to be very tough out there and a lot will depend on the
luck of the draw as the Russians are now dominating world amateur
boxing.
"But Ken,Darren, Eric and Roy know their stuff and they are very
experienced and Darren O'Neill, despite his injury, is still in with a
shout even though he can't take part in the seniors because of his
injury.
"It becomes really intense when Olympic qualification is on the line but
I would be quietly confident that the lads have what it takes to make it
to Beijing."
"Overall the IABA are producing some top class boxers on their High
Performance Programme and we are definitely in their with a shout for
the Beijing as some of the top amateurs in the World and Europe are part
of the Irish squad."
Unbeaten former St Francis Limerick middleweight Lee, who now boxes out
of the Kronk Gym in Detroit, meets Cuban puncher Carlos Daniel Aballe in
his 7th pro fight in Las Vegas this Thursday night.(January 25) |
