Old Al Hostak Passes away
(AUG 14) Al “The Savage Slav” Hostak, 90
years old, born Jan. 7, 1916, died Sunday of complications from a stroke
at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland, Washington, According to news sources,
Hostak is reported to be the oldest living former world-champion boxer.
Hostak fought as a middleweight from the Seattle, Washington, area.
Hostak’s most noted and recognized fights in Seattle, on July 28, 1938,
was when he KO’d Freddie Steele 1:43 in the first round at the Civic
Stadium.
According to the Seattle Times, Hostak
knocked down Steele four times in the first round before Steele was
counted out by referee and former boxing champion Jack Dempsey.
Hostak had a record of 63-9-12 (42KO). He
was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997.
Hostak is survived by his sons, Phil and Terry, who lives in Renton, and
five grandchildren. Hostak's wife, Rose Francis, whom he married in
