WEDNESDAY NIGHT MELEE AT THE MOUNTAIN

FRIANT, CA May 25, 2006 – Tickets are now on sale for the rematch that California fight fans have clamored for ever since the 2003 “war in the ring” between Ricardo Cortes and Christian Cruz. It has finally been scheduled as the 12-round championship headliner of MELEE ON THE MOUNTAIN, Wednesday, June 14th at Table Mountain Casino Event Center. The vacant IBA Americas Super Middleweight Title will go to the winner, on this Roy Englebrecht Events promoted show.

The history of San Jose’s Ricardo Cortes (16-1-1, 12 KOs) and Sacramento’s Christian Cruz (12-4-1, 10 KOs) is a ferocious one that dates back to 2003 when the local heroes clashed for the California state super middleweight title. In one of those rare bouts that pits two rising stars against each other, Cruz, who went past four rounds for the first time in his career, gave his best effort but just fell short of victory against the fast punching Cortes, who scored a stirring ninth round TKO win.

Since that bout, both fighters have met varied levels of success, with Cortes currently on a five fight unbeaten knockout streak. Cruz has lost bouts to unbeaten contenders Lucian Bute and Yusaf Mack, but he also scored impressive wins over top prospects Dallas Vargas and then-unbeaten Enrique Ornelas.

But when these two fierce competitors meet again on June 14th, the past means nothing and the match-up of their styles guarantees an action filled evening. For Cortes, a victory will mean confirming that he is the better of the two fighters and ready for other championships. For Cruz, this chance at redemption is an all or nothing affair.

One of the exciting four under card matches features a women’s bout and another bout features Fresno State’s own Yoshi ‘Samurai’ Fujii from the Southeast Fresno Boxing Club (1-0 professional/12-2 with 3-KOs and Golden Gloves Championship as an amateur).

Table Mountain Casino, located in Friant, California, is promoting MELEE ON THE MOUNTAIN at the Table Mountain Event Center in association with Roy Englebrecht Events. Doors Open at 6:00 p.m. Fights begin at 7:00 p.m.
