(MAR 8) Earlier today, HBN received a press release on the upcoming April 14, 2012, fight that will take place between Tyson Fury and Martin Rogan, who is now 40 years old. There is footage of a press conference that took place on Tuesday at the Odyssey Arena, in London. Link. Checking out some of the comments on the net and on the Youtube page, it does not appear that not everyone is looking forward to this match and were hoping to see "Fury" step it up on better matches. In attendance was Promoter Mick Hennessy, Tyson Fury and Martin Rogan. The fight will be televised on Channel 5.

(MAR 8) The inaugural New York State Boxing Hall of Fame ("NYSBHOF") induction dinner, sponsored by Ring 8, will be held Sunday, April 1 at Russo's On The Bay in Howard Beach, New York. Legendary "Sugar" Ray Robinson, arguably the greatest boxer of all-time, leads a star-studded list of 12 boxers and eight non-participants to be formally inducted. Boxers joining Robinson in the inaugural NYSBHOF class are Mike Tyson, Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basilio, Riddick Bowe, Carlos Ortiz, Vito Antuofermo, Emile Griffith, Mike McCallum and the late Gene Tunney, Benny Leonard and Tony Canzoneri. Non-participant inductees are judge/HBO analyst Harold Lederman, coach/instructor Steve Acunto, trainer/cutman Jimmy Glenn and, posthumously, trainers Gil Clancy and Ray Arcel, The Ring Magazine founder Nat Fleischer, New York Daily News boxing reporter/cartoonist Bill Gallo, and referee Arthur Mercante, Sr. "We're doing this to honor New York fight people," NYSBHOF president Tony Mazzarella said. "This is a dream come true for so many people who've worked hard to make the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame a reality. On April 1st we will be setting the foundation for years to come. March 7, 2012 (Hobart, Australia) - The live webcast on WBCBOXING.TV, that was scheduled to show Daniel Geale vs. Osumanu Adama for free, was being shown around the world against the agreement of Gary Shaw Productions, forcing the stream to be cut off in the U.S. and on the WBCBOXING.TV website. Gary Shaw states, "The WBC has violated the agreement that was set in place to show the stream live in the U.S .for free. Because the WBC opened up the feed to the World, GSP had to kill the signal. The WBC website was only given permission to stream the feed in the U.S. and opening of the signal to the World created problems. On behalf of GSP, we apologize for the confusion."

(MAR 6 ) On Saturday night, March 3, 2012, , at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines, in the main event, a scam of a fight took place in men’s boxing when featherweight Filipino boxer Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista, was duped into fighting another “Genaro 'Panterita' Garcia” and not the intended opponent, “Genaro 'Poblanito' Garcia”, in a non-title ten rounder on the card. The bogus matchup between Bautista, and the wrong “Garcia” bout lasted two rounds, with Garcia going down twice in the second round before getting stopped at 1:24 by KO. What should have been a real test for Rey Bautista---ended up being nothing more than a mere joke of a fight, and inadvertently disgrace to the world of boxing. ..Full Story..

Melson: “This is my Toughest Match Yet - Time To Earn It”

Although he didn’t start boxing until he was a Plebe in his Freshman Year at West Point, Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson’s had a number of big fights. A 2008 Olympic alternate selection, Melson battled future pro standouts Erislandy Lara, Danny Jacobs, DeAndre Latimore, Charles Hatley and Keith Thurman during his amateur career. The New York, NY based junior middleweight also competed in many of the United States’ and World's biggest tournaments however, he considers his next fight the most important to date. On Wednesday evening at BB King Blues Club in Times Square, Melson, 8-0 (4 KO’s), will challenge fellow unbeaten New Yorker Delen “Sniper” Parsley in an eight round contest. At 6’3 with a huge wingspan, Parsley, a talented 24-year-old who’s been around the sport his entire life, has many physical advantages coming into the bout. “Delen is one of the tallest and longest junior middleweights I’ve ever seen,” said Melson, an active Army Reserve officer and West Point grad. “His style will definitely present a challenge. My international experience as an amateur has allowed me the fortune of facing equally tall opponents in the past.” To prepare for his first eight rounder, Melson made a few adjustments to his training regimen. The two most noticeable changes were in his decision to start camp a few weeks earlier and find a way to allow an already extremely overburdened daily schedule to create more space for more road work and additional strength training. Melson feels positive about how this preparation will pay off when the opening bell sounds. “This is the kind of fight that can help either of us get to the next level. It's an excellent challenge for both of us and I am confident that my preparation and my soul's passion will both reveal themselves in the ring!

(MAR 6) Maurice Harris (25-15-2, 11 KOs) has signed a contract to fight Edmund Gerber (19-0, 13 KOs) in Erfurt, Germany on May 5, 2012. Team Sauerland will promote the 8-round bout. Harris' promoter Mario Yagobi of Boxing360 states, "Maurice will travel to Germany and fight Gerber in his homeland. When he's victorious, he'll be right back in title contention looking for a shot to challenge for the world title. Maurice has been in the gym awaiting his next opponent and now he has one. I believe Harris will rise to this occasion and come out victorious." Said Harris from his gym in Newark, New Jersey, "I've been waiting patiently for another opportunity to state my case as a heavyweight contender. My trainer William Bo James has kept me busy in the gym, so I'm confident in my ability to go rounds. Both Gerber and I are looking to get that title shot so I expect him to come out swinging. I have over forty pro fights and I'm going to use that experience to get this victory. I'm prepared to go the distance if need be, but if the knockout presents itself, then I'm going for it." Michael Oliveira to fight Acelino Freitas June 2 in Uruguay

(MAR 6) MO Productions president Carlos Oliveira announced today that the long rumored fight between retired Brazilian living legend, four-time world champion Acelino "Popo" Freitas, and undefeated World Boxing Council South American middleweight champion Michael "The Brazilian Rocky" Oliveira, will take place June 2 at Conrad Punta Del Este and Resort Casino in Uruguay. The 10-round Freitas-Oliveira main event will be contested at 154-pounds. The remainder of the card will be announced at a later date. "Everything was finalized yesterday and 'Popo' signed the contract," Carlos said from Sao Paulo. "We're all very excited that the deal has been made for what will be a huge event for Brazilians. We have a beautiful venue in nearby Uruguay. The fight will air live on Global TV in Brazil and Uruguay television." Oliveira supporters in Brazil are already jokingly saying, "Michael has an opportunity to knockout a politician without going to jail."

Fight on Hold due to Injury: Barker vs. Pirog

Darren Barker has been forced to pull out of a proposed World title clash with WBO middleweight champion Dmitry Pirog after sustaining an injury in training. Barker was set to challenge the Russian in Moscow in May in a title tilt to be announced imminently when he injured his hip in training on Friday, on March 2nd. An examination on the problem revealed the need for surgery, ruling the Londoner out of the proposed May clash and postponing his return to the ring until the autumn – a frustrating development in the 29 year-olds career after his brave title challenge to pound-for-pound star Sergio Martinez in October. "I’m absolutely gutted by the timing of the injury,” said Barker. “I had been feeling good in the gym and was buzzing at the prospect of another World title fight. But I will come again after the summer, get back to full fitness and hopefully the title shot will still be there.” Barker’s promoter Eddie Hearn added: “I'm desperately disappointed for Darren as he has been looking sharp in the gym. Pirog's promoter Artie Pellulo offered us the fight for May but we hope now to rearrange for September. Just in! Strange News in Boxing from out of the Philippines

(MAR 3) It has been reported on Boxrec, that on this card there was a strange mixup as to who was actually fighting Rey Bautista, now 33-2-0 (25KO), at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines (tonight, Philippines time zone). Apparently the promoter had the wrong opponent Genaro Garcia mixed up with another Genaro Garcia! This is what was reported by Jeremy Lantz on Boxrec, "In a mixup of sorts, respected philippine promoter Michael Aldeguer expected Genaro ‘Poblanito’ Garcia, not Genaro ‘El Panteriya’ Garcia, a lightweight with a 10W-11L record to be the opponent of Rey Bautista to arrive into the philippines. Due to the setback the promoter refunded all of those in attendance what they had paid; making this a free event." Needless to say, the incorrect opponent, did not last but 1:24 in the second round before getting KO'd!

According to online news sources, Carlos Ruiz, fought and won by a four-round unanimous decision over Hector Colin; Roberto Hernandez won a four-round split over Jose Alberto Ruiz; Felipe Jesus, won by a second round TKO over Juan Carlos Hernandez in a scheduled four; Daniel Hernandez won a four-round unanimous decision over Yacob Farias; Noe Acosta won a four-round split decision over Yokio Carranza; Emmanuel Herrera won a four-rounder by decision over Adrian Rodriguez; Ricky Gatica won by first round TKO over Sebastian Hernandez; Santiango Sandova won by KO first round over Israel Enciso; Jose Luis Cruz won a four-round unanimous decision over Alan Garcia; and Guillermo Garcia won by a four-rounder over Julio Lopez. In addition in a tenth bout on the card, pro debuter Hugo Martinez won by a four round unanimous decision over Ismael Garmica who came into the fight with one loss.

WBC Un-Suspended Boxer Tomas Rojas after he had apparently taken money to Fake a KO

(MAR 2) HBN received news from the WBC that after long talks that they had unsuspended male boxer Tomas Rojas for what was reported in the news as a 2007 incident that occurred when he took $8,000 to lose a fight against Jorge Arce. The WBC reported, "The World Boxing Council during long audience determined that there’s no reason whatsoever to prove such indictment, the decision was put to voting and the board of directors approved that the boxer can fight again in professional boxing. The WBC recommended him to be restraint on his statements and performances in order to avoid similar circumstances that can tarnish his career and the sport of boxing. The President of The World Boxing Council, Jose Sulaiman Chagnon, wants to personally thank the Municipal President of Ensenada, Baja California, Mr. Enrique Pelayo Torres for have given his support to the organization and also to the president of Zanfer Promotions Fernando Beltran for having retired the bout that was scheduled to be performed by Rojas last February 25 in Ensenada." According to one website Rojas had added to a reporter (off the record) that he took a dive. Rojas said, "I will be honest … it went like that. Necessity makes you do things you don’t want to. I don’t know … I’m angry, I said that to him (the reporter), but as friends, I told him not to say anything, but I did say it, and that reporter should have better ethics."

Joe "The Irish Bomber" Smith to Go "ALL IN" March 30th at Foxwoods!

(MAR 2) On Friday March 30, 2012, Mastic, Shirley Long Island's power punching light heavyweight Joe "The Irish Bomber" Smith makes his second ring appearance after having his jaw shattered August 2010 on the undercard of Jimmy Burchfield's CES Boxing's "ALL IN" card at Foxwoods Resort and Casino, Mashantucket, Connecticut. Back in August 2010, Smith perfect at the time 6-0, 6Ko's had his jaw shattered by a freak punch by Eddie "Thunder" Caminero early in the second round. The rugged two time New York Gold Glove winner in apparent pain continued to fight on finally retiring unable to bear the pain while ahead on the judges scorecards. Smith was later diagnosed with a shattered jaw requiring surgery and metal plates. Full Story

Emanuel Steward predicts world title for Adonis 'Superman' Stevenson

(MAR 1) Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward predicts a world title for his newest Kronk Gym-boxer, super middleweight sensation Adonis Stevenson, who defends his IBF Inter-Continental belt Saturday night in Montreal, in the 12-round main event that is also an IBF voluntary eliminator for the No. 2 position, against former NABF champion Jesus Gonzales. WBA, the dangerous Stevenson is also the reigning North American Boxing Association NABA and NABO and IBF Inter-Continental super middleweight champion. After this week's action, Stevenson will quickly switch his sights to become the No. 1 rated and mandatory challenger to IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute. Stevenson vs. Gonzalez headlines a Quebec star-studded "Fast & Furious Boxing Series" event, presented by Mise-O-Jeu and Videotron, at the famed Bell Centre. Steward is in Austria training WBA/IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko for his March 3 title defense against Jean Marc Mormeck in Germany. However, Emanuel will be working Stevenson's corner this Saturday evening, passing up an opportunity to watch WBC heavyweight titlist Vitali Klitschko fight Dereck Chisora, also in Germany, on the same night.
