to fight Margarito for WBC Belt August 30, 2010 |

The World
Boxing Council received a request from Top Rank Inc. to approve the bout
between Manny Pacquiao and Mexican fighter, Antonio Margarito, for the
WBC Superwelterweight world title, to be held at the Dallas Cowboys
Stadium this coming November 13th. The voting in favor of the
fight was unanimous by the Board of Governors, as it is considered to be
one of the great bouts that can be held in these times between two great
fighters. The title was vacated when former world champion, Sergio
Martinez, decided to do so, after winning the WBC Middleweight world
title when he defeated Kelly Pavlik last April 17th. This
bout will take place exactly one week after the 48th WBC
Annual World Convention to be held in Cancun is closed.

(AUG 21) Former IBF cruiserweight champion Vassiliy Jirov (38-3-1, 32 Kos) has dropped back down to cruiser from the heavyweight division and is actively seeking a "name" opponent. A fearsome body puncher seemingly incapable of taking a backward step, Jirov, 36, earned his reputation as a crowd favourite the hard way, by never being in a bad fight. Among others, Jirov was in the Fight of the Year against James Toney and retired then #1 heavyweight contender Joe Mesi. Manager Ivaylo Gotzev says he has several lines in the water for Jirov. "I made contact with (top-rated cruiserweight) Danny Green's people, thinking that after the Paul Briggs debacle, he'd want a better challenge. Hopefully Danny Green, the mighty warrior from Down Under won't disappoint his fans in Australia." Plan B, according to Gotzev, is fighting on the same show as Roy Jones Jr. and then two facing each other after that in St. Petersburg, Russia. "We've wanted Roy Jones for well over a decade. Hopefully we can bring this to reality." Whoever Jirov ends up facing, Gotzev says he's sure the fans will be the ultimate winners. "The plan is to mix it up with a big-name fighter and make some exciting fights. No matter who Vassiliy fights, rest assured, his style is do or die and he will not disappoint. He's a proven warrior ready to return to battle. 'The Tiger' is back on the Hunt."

| ABC Commission Press Release:
Antonio Margarito August 20, 2010 |
![]() |
(AUG 20) HBN received a press release on a meeting concerning Antonio Margarito, dated August 19th. They said the following: "In the matter of the Antonio Margarito case the Association of Boxing Commissions, (ABC), officers were pleased that Mr. Antonio Margarito did indeed appear before the California State Athletic Commission, (CSAC), for licensure, the ABC had maintained since the beginning of this matter that Mr. Margarito should seek a hearing with CSAC. The ABC was also pleased that other member commissions held firm against licensing Mr. Margarito until he could appear before CSAC since they were the original disciplining commission. The ABC believes that the CSAC did their due diligence in conducting a fair an impartial hearing and should be commended for laying out the facts and findings surrounding this matter. At this time Mr. Margarito has fulfilled his obligations per the ABC (which was to appear before the CSAC before applying for licensure to another state/tribal commission in the United States) and thus he is now free to pursue licensure with any ABC member commission. There is nothing under the federal law that would prohibit consideration for licensure. The ABC would hope that each ABC member commission would examine the facts that have been laid out by the CSAC and weigh those facts in determining if Mr. Margarito should indeed be licensed to compete in their jurisdiction." If most will recall, Margarito's license was revoked by the California State Athletic Commission after an illegal hand-wrapping scandal in January 2009. dealing directly with the promoters of all the champions and top contenders.
It will be a lot easier to make deals directly. Just because I have
not had a fight in a year, it doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy. I have been
in cam with John Ruiz, David Haye and Chad Dawson and that has kept me
beyond sharp. I am chomping at the bit to get one of the champions.
This last year has given me a chance to focus on power and strength.
