Byram to fight on July 6th at the
Hard Rock Casino/Hotel in Vegas
May 15, 2012
(MAY 15) Like
most professional boxers, heavyweight Maurice
“Freight Train” Byarm never thought about what
it’d be like to lose. The Washington, DC based
Philadelphian stopped 9 of his first 13
opponents and was named one of the best
prospects in the beltway region. Still, Byarm,
who had less than 15 amateur fights, was
learning on the job. Between his work ethic and
sparring quality fighters such as Tony Thompson,
Byarm made notable improvements with every
fight. In his final bout of 2011, the
crowd-pleasing 29-year-old stopped veteran
Clinton Boldridge in 74 seconds and planned to..Full

(MAY 15) Argentinean welterweight contender
Hector "El Tigre" Saldivia (41-2, 32 KO) has
signed a managerial agreement with middleweight
champion Sergio Martinez's Maravilla Box and
re-signed another long-term promotional
agreement with promoter Sampson Lewkowicz of

IBF and #15 in the WBC. Saldivia is
currently riding an eight-fight winning streak.
As part of the Maravilla Box stable, Saldivia
will now be trained by the mastermind behind so
many of his fighters' success, super trainer
Pablo Sarmiento. "Now that he is
with the best manager and trainer in boxing, it
will be Hector's time to become champion," said
the proud Lewkowicz. "We will be petitioning the
IBF to fight an eliminator for the right to face
the winner of the Mike Jones and Randall Bailey
fight for the vacant title in June."
Rodriguez prepared to replace Dirrell
May 14, 2012
Undefeated super middleweight contender Edwin
"La Bomba" Rodriguez is ready, willing and able
to replace No. 1 contender Anthony Dirrell, who
was recently injured in a motorcycle accident,
and fight No. 2 rated Nikola Sjekloca for the
vacant WBC 68-pound title. Sjekloca and Dirrell,
who is out of action for a reported six months,
were ordered to fight for the WBC title, after
Andre Ward was declared "Champion in Recess."
The 27-year-old Rodriguez (21-0, 14 KOs), a
native of the Dominican Republic who lives in
Worcester (MA), has been showcased on HBO, three
times on ShoBox, and featured twice on ESPN. In
his last five fights, he has beaten opponents
with a combined record of 83-7-2, including
three world-rated fighters (Don George, Aaron
Pryor, Jr. and James McGirt), as well as
unbeaten National amateur champion Will Rosinsky).
Sjekloca (24-0, 7 KOs), a 33-year-old Serbian
who lives in Montenegro, is the reigning WBC
International super middleweight champion.
However, he has fought only once outside of
Montenegro and Serbia, in 2010 against 8-24
Artem Vychkin in a win by six-round decision.
The lone opponent of note Sjekloca has fought is
four-time world title challenger and former
European champion, Khoren Gevor, who lost a
close 12-round decision to Sjekloca last year.

THE RING Magazine – Punch Drunk
and Fading Fast
By Dave McKee
May 10, 2012
(MAY 10) Speeding along its
rapid decline into irrelevance, THE RING has instituted a new
championship policy. The publicly stated purpose of the new policy is to
address the very real problem that “the Nos. 1- and 2-rated fighters
rarely face one another in the modern boxing era.” THE RING editors have
felt compelled to intervene in a substantive manner to force competition
in the upper ranks of each division for the purpose of better
determining a true champion in each. It is the belief of the editors
that this will “create more championship fights while maintaining the
high standards long associated with THE RING.” The new standards for
determining a champion are as follows

Light Heavyweight sensation Ismayl Sillakh (17-1, 14 KOs) tasted defeat
for the first time in dramatic fashion at the hands of unheralded yet
unbeaten Russian mauler Denis Grachev (12-0-1, 8 KOs) yesterday evening
at the upset laden Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX. The highly-touted
Ukrainian prospect was pitching a virtual shut-out going into the
fateful eighth stanza of their scheduled ten round contest when the hard
Russian pressure fighter landed a staggering right hand that originally
began the troubles for the former NABF Light Heavyweight Champion. The
former kick-boxer turned pugilist followed up the hard right hand by a
series of unanswered hooks, eventually flooring and stopping the heavily
favored Ismayl Sillakh at the 2:18 mark

(MAY 9) Team USA added a
fifth member to their Olympic boxing team on Tuesday evening as light
welterweight Jamel Herring (Coram, N.Y.) qualified his spot in London.
Herring won his third bout in four days to qualify the light
welterweight division for the United States squad. Heavyweight Michael
Hunter (Las Vegas, Nev.) notched his second win of the tournament to
advance to the semifinal round but has not officially qualified his spot
yet. The United States Marine Corps Sergeant faced off with
Yoelvis Hernandez of Venezuela in light welterweight quarterfinal action
with the winner earning a berth in London and the loser going home empty
handed. The bout was a close contest throughout the nine minutes of
action with Herring taking the critical first round lead by a 5-3
margin. Hernandez pulled it to a 7-6 margin with only the final round
remaining, but Herring refused to give up his lead and his Olympic
dream. He staved off a late comeback, winning a 12-10 final decision and
a berth on the 2012 Olympic Team. Full Story

Andrade Makes it a short Night!

(MAY 6) Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade continued
his march towards a world title shot, knocking
out Rudy Cisneros at the end of the first round
in tonight's "ESPN Boxing: FNF Special Edition,"
presented by Corona Extra, at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Andrade (17-0, 11 KOs), a fast-rising junior
middleweight from Providence, is rated No. 6 in
the WBO and No. 7 in the IBF. The gifted, young
southpaw established his lightning-quick jab
early, followed with some solid body punching,
and closed the show with a perfect right, left
combination that dropped Cisneros (12-4, 11 KOs)
with three seconds left in the opening round.
Chisneros, a Contender, Season Two participant,
was taken out of the ring on a stretcher because
he was dizzy. He reportedly was healthy in the
locker room and taken to Backus Hospital for
precautionary reasons only. Andrade, who
is co-promoted by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing
and Banner Promotions, explained that he simply
followed the game plan. "The game plan was to
use my jab to set-up opportunities," he said. "I
kept throwing punches early and saw that he
dropped his right....and there it goes! I knew
he'd walk into it. In the women's bout, the
fight was stopped in the second round and ruled
a "No Contest" when Victoria Cisneros, who was
fighting Addy Irizarry received a cut from an
accidental headbutt.

Hopkins got injured early in that bout, Dawson was initially declared

to
Victory in Paradise
April 27, 2012
(APR 27) On Wednesday, at the Marin Center in
Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, promoter
Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing and
co-promoter Lesley Commission of 340 Boxing
Promotions presented "Boxing in Paradise V" to a
sold-out crowd, who didn't go home disappointed.
Fighting in the night's main event before a
hometown crowd, John Jackson son of former world
champion Julian Jackson, defended his WBC Youth
World Light Middleweight Championship and
spoiled the undefeated record of Mexico's Jesus
Selig via TKO 3 (1:33). Selig was the
second consecutive undefeated fighter to be
steamrolled by 23-year-old Jackson, who seems
destined to pick up where his power-punching
father left off. In the main supporting bout,
older brother Julius Jackson successfully
defended his USNBC Super Middleweight Title with
a TKO 2 (3:00) over Durrell Richardson. Both
brothers were 2008 Olympians and both have been
nothing but impressive throughout their brief
but explosive professional careers. On the
undercard, St. Croix super middleweight Clarence
Joseph spoiled the pro debut of Puerto Rico's
Eduardo Anduroby TKO 1 (0:55); while his
brother, super middleweight Austin Joseph, won
by TKO 1 (1:52) over Pembroke Pines, Florida's
Adam Schwartz. Julian Jackson's nephew,
undefeated Samuel Rogers had his scheduled fight
scratched at the last minute due to visa issues
for his opponent.
Tonight: Tony Bellew vs. Danny
McIntosh
April 27, 2012
Tony Bellew tackles Danny McIntosh tonight in
their hotly anticipated British light
heavyweight clash at the Echo Arena in Liverpool
live on Sky Sports 1HD – and the home town
fighter is urging the city to back football’s
Kick It Out campaign. The champ is a huge
Everton fan and recently trod the Goodison Park
turf with his idol Duncan Ferguson to give their
backing to the club’s community work, and now
the 29 year old is championing football’s fight
against racism after a tough year for the
problem. “Sport is designed to unite people and
bring them together,” said Bellew. “When you
look at the minute’s silence at the Cup semi
against Liverpool, it was impeccable because
it’s a city united by football. I think boxing
does the same as we’ve got some great fighters
on Merseyside and we all try to do our bit in
the community by getting kids off the streets
and in the gyms. “There’s been some
unsavoury moments this season on and off the
pitch and everyone needs to step up to the plate
and say enough is enough and stamp it out.
Everton do some great work in the community,
raising awareness of issues like racism and also
working with kids – the club has my full support
as everyone knows, but even more so with the
work they do with Kick It Out.” Bellew
defends the title against the Norwich contender
in front of his home crowd, and the belt holder
thanked his fans for their support and issued a
rallying cry as the first bell draws
tantalisingly close.

'Island Assault 4: The Battle' PPV
April 25, 2012
(APR 25) A strong undercard has been
announced for the May 12th "Island Assault 4:
The Battle" pay-per-view-event, featuring Brian
Viloria vs. Omar Nino Romero III, live from
Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City, Metro Manila,
Philippines. "Island Assault 4:The
Battle," presented by Solar Sports, is being
distributed in the United States by Integrated
Sports Media for live viewing at 9:00 PM/ET -
6:00 PM/PT on both cable and satellite
pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, DISH
Network and Avail-TVN for a suggested retail
price of only $29.95. "Island Assault 4: The
Battle" will also be available in Canada to
Super Channel subscribers. The completion of the
Viloria-Romero trilogy, originally slated for
March 31, was temporarily delayed because the
Nevada State Athletic Commission prevented the
WBO from sanctioning the fight due to unpaid
penalties on Romero's part. From 2006, Romero
has amassed a total of $11,500 in penalties
which he needed to pay before the fight is
sanctioned.Three-time world champion Viloria, a
2000 U.S. Olympian, defends his "WBO" title belt
against two-time world title-holder Romero, in
the 12-round main event. Viloria won his first
20 pro fights, until he lost the WBC light
flyweight championship to Romero by way of a
12-round unanimous decision in 2006. Three
months later, their rematch ended in a draw that
was later changed to a "no contest" when Romero
failed a post-fight drug test. The
10-round co-feature matches a pair of former
world champions, Julio Cesar Miranda and Rodel
Mayol, in a 10-round bout with future world
flyweight title fight implications.
Miranda, rated No. 3 by the WBO and No. 4 by the
WBA is a Mexican knockout artist who dropped his
WBO title fight last year to Viloria. WBC No. 9
and IBF #12 Mayol, a Filipino now living in Los
Angeles, lost his WBC Light Flyweight crown,
ironically, to Romero in 2010. The
remainder of the May 12 PPV card is filled-out
by the next wave of Filipino prospects. Robert
Bert" Udtuhan faces Alvin Makiling in a 12-round
match for the Interim WBO Asia-Pacific
Bantamweight Championship. In a special 10-round
Featherweight Attraction, undefeated
featherweight Jun Doliguez fights veteran
Jonel Alibio.
The Lampkins: A Boxing Story
by Bernie McCoy
April 24, 2012
Photos: Sue TL Fox
(APR 24) If sports
were months, boxing would be April, which T. S. Eliot labeled as the
"cruelest month." That's because even the rare "feel good" tales in the
sport have a hard edge to them. This one is about the Lampkins, father
and son, out of a once great fight town, Portland, OR. The son, at 18,
commenced a four year amateur career that took him to national
prominence and, two weeks ago, at age 28, began a comeback with his
debut bout as a professional boxer. The back story is of the father, one
of the top ranked lightweight fighters of the 1970s, who stormed out of
the clean, clear air of the Northwest and fought his way to the heat and
humidity of Panama in a valiant attempt to unseat a champion who may
have been the best lightweight of all time. And, of course, as with most
boxing stories, this one is about the quest for fame and fortune in
succeeding generations, unfulfilled promise, youthful missteps, and the
irrefutable truth about a sport that usually pays off on dreams of fame
at the rate of around two cents on each dollar of effort expended.

Danny Garcia to be Honored by
Philadelphia City Council on April 23rd
April 21, 2012
(APR 21) Joining the esteemed ranks of
Philadelphia boxing champions Joe Frazier and
Bernard Hopkins is the newest world champion
from the City of Brotherly Love, Danny "Swift"
Garcia. Garcia will be honored and recognized at
a special reception with Philadelphia Mayor
Michael A. Nutter, co-sponsored by Councilwoman
Maria Quiñones Sánchez (7th Dist.) and
Councilman Curtis Jones, Jr. (4th Dist.) to be
held on Monday, April 23, 2012 at 11:00 am ET.
"We are proud to call 'Swift' a local hero and
role model for our young people," said
Councilman Jones. "We need more champions in our
communities who are excelling and realizing
spectacular achievements like this." "I'm
proud to be another Philadelphia champion,
because this is a tough city," said Garcia. "I'm
ready to make a historic mark as a Philadelphia
fighter and make my city proud." "We are
extremely proud of Danny's accomplishments at
such a young age," said Oscar de la Hoya,
president of Golden Boy Promotions, Garcia's
boxing promotional company. "We know he is going
to keep improving and continue to make the great
city of Philadelphia and Golden Boy very proud."
Danny "Swift" Garcia is a Puerto Rican-American
professional boxer and the current World Boxing
Council (WBC) Super Lightweight World Champion.
On Saturday, March 24, 2012, Garcia captured the
WBC Super Lightweight title by defeating future
Hall of Fame and Mexican superstar Erik "El
Terrible" Morales by unanimous decision.
Boxing runs in the Garcia family, as Danny's
father and former boxer, Angel Garcia,
introduced him to boxing as a youngster and
began taking him to Philadelphia's Harrowgate
Boxing Club when he was just 10 years old, the
minimum age allowed by local law for a minor to
train. Garcia's professional record stands
at 23 wins and zero losses with 14 wins coming
by way of knockout. He compiled over one hundred

rounds before dropping opponent Charles Hayward with a vicious right

History seemed to be repeating itself, with another fight for Richard
Pierson falling through last minute. When presented the chance to
fight the bigger man and former light heavyweight Hayward only days
before the scheduled bout, Pierson accepted…nothing was going to prevent
him from getting into that ring last night. Full Story

Jose
Pedraza to face Gil Garcia
April 17, 2012
(APR 17) On April 27, 2012, in Miami,
Oklahoma, José "Sniper" Pedraza (7-0, 6KO's),
from Puerto Rico, will be opening the telecast
of the SHOWTIME series ShoBox: The New
Generation, live at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on
the West Coast). Pedraza's opponent, Gil
García (5-2-1, 1KO), from Texas, recently fought
to a controversial draw against undefeated
Gabino Saenz (6-0, 5KO's) and has a
controversial majority decision loss to Jerry
Belmontes (15-0, 5KO's). "García is a tough
opponent that throws lots of punches, but we are
more than ready for that. My condition is
perfect, and we are very happy to be on a
SHOWTIME fight," says Pedraza. Pedraza's WBC
Youth super featherweight title will not be at
stake. Pedraza's father, trainer and manager,
Luis Espada, commented: "Pedraza is in great
shape, near the weight limit, and the sparring
with former world champ Rocky Martínez went
great."
Espada also talked about Pedraza's opponent, Gil
García: "I saw a video and he is an aggressive
fighter that never backs down. Also, he has a
controversial loss to Jerry Belmontes. We think
García is a good fit for Pedraza's development."
The Pedraza vs. García bout is set for eight
rounds at a maximum weight limit of 132 pounds.
Middleweight Brandon Harder Explodes
Onto Boxing Scene With Impressive KO
April 17, 2012
Photo/Facebook of Harder
(APR 17) This past Saturday night at the
Landers Center in Southaven, MS, middleweight
Brandon Harder made his pro boxing debut in
style with a devastating knockout victory
against Willie Bryant. At 52 seconds into
Round 3 the southpaw threw a textbook short
right hand and caught Bryant square on the
proverbial ‘button’, putting him to sleep in
dramatic fashion, his limp neck and arms being
held up by the rope as his body just laid there
motionless. Experiencing the glory of
winning by KO is nothing new to Harder. As a MMA
fighter Harder is 2-1, 1 KO, 1 Submission), but
he showed Prize Fight Promotions and his large
crew of supporters that he has found a home
within the squared circle. “It means
everything,” said Harder. “I work full-time as a
Memphis Police Officer, so I sacrifice all my
free time to training and running our awesome
new facility, Prize Fight MMA Academy in
Southaven.” You see a lot of boxers and
MMA fighters making the transition from one
fight sport to another, and it was clear that
having the professional MMA background as
Brandon does gave him an edge Saturday night.
“I do believe it gives me an advantage,” said
Harder. “I love to stand in the pocket and throw
leather. My mental toughness from fighting MMA
has to help as I can go places mentally in there
where most cannot.” Going forward, Harder
has proved that he can dominate whether it is
within the cage or the ring, but where does the
heavy hitter feel most at home? “I’m doing both
(MMA and boxing); I love to fight so the more
often the better. I have always trained boxing
separate so a few weeks out I cut off the MMA
training and focus solely on boxing. I’m back in
the cage May 19 at the Landers Center and will
be looking to knock another head off somebody!”
Brandon Harder has shown he has the
determination, drive and raw talent to go far in
this sport. In a division without too many big
punchers and fighters prepared to go to war each
time they step between the ropes, Brandon Harder
may be what the boxing world needs to get
excited about again.
“Lastly, I’d like to thank my Lord; he puts
people in my life that bring so much positivity.
Also my amazing girlfriend Michelle who trains
with me on a daily basis; and my tough as nails
training partners Jake and Zach Underwood—they
hit harder with 16 oz. gloves on than most do in
4 oz! I lost my boxing coach Ken Blann last
October; he was a trainer of champions but most
of all he was a father figure and a beautiful
person. I fought that fight for him.” A class
act in and out of the ring, remember the name
Brandon Harder, as he will undoubtedly be making
a big splash in the fight world in the near
future.

Gift from an Angel: Smokin’
Joe Frazier
April 10, 2012
SIMI VALLEY—Memories of our
friends, especially professional boxers who move on to better things in
heaven, are usually sweet and maybe even bittersweet. The bottom line is
that we are accepting of the fact that we are left with memories, and no
more …..UNLESS you are talking about Smokin’ Joe Frazier!
Joseph William "Joe" Frazier (January 12, 1944 – November 7, 2011), also
